Peter Brezovan was Swindon's hero as they opened their campaign with a win. Hartlepool had the first of a host of chances on three minutes but Brezovan saved Joel Porter's spot-kick after the striker was fouled by Ricky Shakes.
Lee Peacock's header gave Swindon the lead before Brezovan saved Porter's deflected shot and denied Lee Bullock.
Breznovan stopped a close-range Michael Nelson volley and Bullock and Porter hit the woodwork before the Slovakian beat out a Ritchie Humphreys penalty.
