INDIANA JONES AND THE WHO GIVES A FLYING F**K!?What is it with George Lucas? Can he not just do cinema a long overdue service by retiring? This is the man who gave us Star Wars, a movie scripted and directed by him, and created on the back of the astounding work of his own special effects company. Countless Star Wars characters that remain etched fondly in mine and many other peoples' childhood memories have since transcended popular culture and rightly earned him a fortune. Lucas even had the good sense to pass the directing baton to Irving Krishner for the sequel, an inspired move that contributed to The Empire Strikes Back being the darkest and best film of the trilogy. Hell, I was even willing to let the Ewoks in Return Of The Jedi slide, and then greed cast its ugly shadow.... The Star Wars pre-quels for the most part stank; cynical money making excercises that were as much about selling toys as they were about telling a story. Ben Kenobi was suddenly the Scottish bloke from Trainspotting, saddled with apalling quips Ewan McGregor never stood a chance. Natalie Portman, one of the finest actresses of her generation was reduced to little more than a ridiculous looking clothes horse, while Yoda suddenly became the most agile creature ever to walk the Earth, despite the fact that he was pushing 900 years of age and in his very autumn years; it gave some a cheap thrill, for me it bastardised his memory! Worst of all though was Anakin Skywalker, the man who would become Vader was undoubtedly the most compelling character in Lucas' universe, yet Lucas cast Hayden Christiansen, a man whose performance was so wooden you could make a dining set out of it. All in all, a travesty! Now, having single-handedly done more to destroy the legacy of Star Wars than anyone thought possible he decides to move in on his other golden creation, this time bringing his old mate and collaborator, Steven Speilberg, along for the ride. Indiana Jones was a great film character and was the subject of 3 very entertaining films back in the 1980's and that's exactly where the franchise should have ended. It's as if history is repeating itself again, just with less CGI this time. There's no need to spend time dwelling on the plot as it's always the same; Indy and friends are competing with the bad guys for some fabled lost archaelogical treasure, this time Shia LeBeouf joins the gang as Indy's son while Cate Blanchett leads the evil Russians. The whole thing seems very, very stale, as if time has passed the franchise by. The set peices are like a retread, a greatest hits package if you like of what has gone before, the dialogue is cringe-worthy and the story feeble. I don't want to taint my memories any further so I'll be avoiding the inevitable cash milking sequels. 4/10

REQUIEM FOR A DREAMDarren Aronofsky's film is a bleak and profoundly upsetting study of the consequences of drug addiction. The story is that of Harry (Jared Leto), a waster and cannabis user, and his mother (Ellen Burstyn), a widow who dreams of appearing on television. Both characters' troubles kick-in at around the same time; Harry when he starts dealing and consequently gets hooked on heroin, and Sara when she receives an invite to appear on a TV show, and in an effort to fit into her favourite red dress starts taking diet pills. As all the profits from the heroin dealing are consumed by Harry and his girlfriend's habit, Harry pushes Marion (Jennifer Connelly) to re-ignite her relationship with an old boyfriend in order to get them money. That money is soon not enough though and Marion slowly finds herself selling her body so she can feed their addictions. As the situation escalates so Harry's health deterioates, and there is a huge price to pay. Sara's impatience to slim down drastically meanwhile leads her to increase her dosage of pills, she sheds the pounds but at great cost to her mental and physical health. The performances in the film are top rate, quite how Ellen Burstyn didn't win the best actress Oscar that year I'll never know. Cliff Mansell's score is also superb - his main theme has since been adopted by Sky Sports News - adding so much to the texture of the piece. However, the real stars of the show are the director, editor and production designer; 'Requiem For A Dream' looks amazing. Split screens, some ingenious special effects and a great deal of imaginative visual flair ensure the film stands apart from almost any other. There are no happy endings here, and no use of humour to provide light relief from the desperate situations these people find themselves in, Trainspotting it isn't. Nevertheless, the story, the acting, the score and the visuals add up to make this an unmissable viewing experience. 'Requiem For A Dream' may be too far removed from the mainstream to ever gain widespread recognition, but undoubtedly it stands up as a ground breaking classic. 10/10

Having thought things over in view of your comments, and with the benefit of hindsight.........I'd still give it 4/10! Twas pants! ;D you need to learn to be more objective ;D I'm open minded! Only yesterday I watched a thriller, and just because it was Chilean and it featured an exotic dancer who dnaced with only shaving foam to cover her modesty, I wasn't predisposed to judge it as a piece of trashy exploitation!! ;D Los Debutantes - 7/10.
