oh, sorry - it was the first time I had seen it so maybe I missed somin, but I didn't think it was very good! I ain't trying to wind anyone up mate! LOL I was joking about the dinner parties bit! But you know, it's a classic film, maybe too much of a sacred cow but I don't think so... I can see why you might think the plot wasn't too inspired, but it's one of those you have to think about a bit maybe...

You're probably right jh - might need a second viewing!! I think maybe the first time it'll strike you as a bit slow, and that not very much is going on. you need to focus on the characterisation of the anti-hero, and the dialogue I guess. It's also done in a style which is not so popular nowadays (to my mind) - but I'm no film studies student so I'm not quite sure what I'm trying to express there.

the, um, anti-hero I feel stupid well, the role of Travis in the film is ambiguous - yes he's a crusader for good, he wants to save little Iris, he wants to kill the pimps and dealers... at the same time he's a little unbalanced and his vigilante behaviour is strange. He lacks social skills - hence the date that goes wrong. It's really all about him... and he's not a classic "hero" figure, he's flawed, interesting. Fickle, if I'm wrong here feel free to correct me!

OFFSIDE
Iranian film set around the final qualifying game for the 2006 World Cup between Iran and Bahrain, and the attempts of a group of Iranian women to see the match. It's a common law of movies that the subject matter of football doesn't for some reason make for compelling cinema. However, in Offside, the game merely exists on the periphery, providing a backdrop for a small scale human drama.
Initially tracking the committed but ultimately unsuccesful attempt of one female to infiltrate stadium security, the remainder of the film concentrates on the relationship between five detained women, and those guarding them. The film portrays with conviction both the womens' passion for the sport, and their sense of inequality at being denied the opportunity to watch the match, unable to stand shoulder to shoulder with the men inside the stadium. While even the soldiers, initially dispassionate to the womens' plight, show warmth and humanity in the celebratory aftermath of the game. A film not so much about football itself, but rather the passion and joy it inspires.
7/10

Hot Fuzzi went to see this film because loads of people at school were raving about how good it was. i have to say i was slightly dissapointed. i expected a laugh a minute and although some bits were hilarious, i found the middle section seemed to drag. dont get me wrong, it is the funniest film ive seen in a long time, much better than borat, but the way people "bigged it up" i was expecting better things... the funniest bit was when the guy drop kicked the old woman in the face! 8/10

Isn't that always the case with films that get a lot of hype though? I can't recall a single film that really lived up to major hyping.

Brokeback Mountain
I'm a little behind with this one but I watched it over the weekend. I have to say I never thought I was prudish but I found this quite uncomfortable to watch. I thought Michelle Williams was good in it and that she played downtrodden very well.
Half the time I couldn't understand what Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhall were saying although I did buy the romantic aspect of their relationship.
The redeeming feature of the film was the cinematography. It was beautifully shot but a film needs more than lingering lanscape shots and moody silences.
4/10

DEAD END
An absolute travesty of a horror film, it tells the story of a family traveling over to a relatives house for the Christmas celebrations. However when the father decides to take the scenic route, rather than the highway, the family encounter a strange 'lady in white' and events take a turn for the worse.
Now I can barely find words sufficient to describe this miserable piece of crap; how it's attained a decent rating on the IMDb, and why my friend bought it I'll never know. Never even vaguely unnerving, never mind scary, it's poorly directed, cliched beyond reason, has plot holes the size of the ozone layer, and an ending so unspeakably awful that I was tempted to put my foot through the television.
Awful, awful, awful!!!
0.1/10

HOT FUZZ
I don't think there's any need to introduce the plot, so straight down to business. I've heard one or two complaining about the film, stating that they thought it was a pale imitation of 'Shaun of the Dead', and a couple of girls came out of the cinema yesterday saying they had wasted their money, and it was boring.....What the hell are they talking about??
Looking at it objectively, 'Shaun of the Dead' arrived with minimal expectations, other than fans of the fantastic 'Spaced', advance interest was minimal, so when it hit the screens it came to most as a delightful surprise. This time out, expectation - partly fueled by a long promotional campaign, dating back to the autumn - has been huge, and seemingly impossible to live up to.
I personally would rank the film as pretty much the equal of 'Shaun of the Dead', the jokes are endless, and often 'laugh out loud' funny, while the constant referencing of other movies (most notably The Wicker Wan, The Omen, Rosemary's Baby, A Fistful of Dollars, Bad Boys and Point Break) was a joy to see. Meanwhile the juxtaposition of the US cop action genre with a village setting, was if anything, an even greater stretch than zombies in the suburbs, and worked superbly.
At 2 hours, the film could have maybe done with losing 10-15 minutes (as would any comedy of this length), but that small quibble aside, terrific.
8.5/10

I've not understood how people didn't like the film - thought it was hilarious personally.
