Relegation for sure, and I hate it !
Eagles boss resigns
Mr Platnauer hopes his decision will give the club a "shot in the arm"
Following a string of poor results, and with the Eagles languishing at the bottom of Conference South, manager Nick Platnauer announced his resignation today.
Having helped Bedford gain promotion from the Southern League Premier Division last season via the play-offs, Mr Platnauer has struggled to replace striker Rene Howe and Chris Dillon who departed during the summer.
Bedford have only managed 24 goals in 27 games this term, and with time running out to stave off relegation Mr Platnauer decided to stand aside.
He said: "At the end of the day I think a manager has to take responsibility for results and performances. It's been a tough three months for everybody. I've been trying to put it right and the results haven't happened.
"I always believed I could turn it around and I felt one result would kickstart our season.
"However, the game have gone on and it's obviously proved not to be the case.
"One point from 12 games in anybody's language isn't good enough."
Mr Platnauer, who has been in charge for three years, said he was deeply disappointed it had come to this but hoped his decision would give the club a "shot in the arm."
He added: "I want the club to do well and if that means me leaving for them to have any chance, so be it."
Despite the best efforts of the club's board, they could not dissuade Mr Platnauer from his decision, who had been in charge at the club for three years.
Chairman David Howell said: "Everybody has tried to talk him out of it but he has obviously made up his mind and there's nothing more we can do.
"It's not what we want, but he feels enough is enough from his point of view. I think he has tried everything he can and it's not worked. It's truly an altruistic in his decision."
Assistant manager Dave Randall has taken control of first team affairs, and guided Bedford to a 0-0 home draw against fellow strugglers Basingstoke Town on Tuesday night. However, the club will not make a snap decision to replace Mr Platnauer.
Mr Howell said: "We are certainly not going to rush into anything that's for sure. We've done that before and it's not worked.
"We've just got to focus on getting through the next few games.
"It's come as a shock. We weren't expecting it and we don't have any names at all in mind.
"We've parted on very good terms. He is welcome here any time he likes and I genuinely hope things work out for him."
