im guessing because of that was the only slot of land within enough distance to build a stadium.

The club was formed from the merger of Thames Ironworks and Old Castle Swifts (hence the United part of the name). As both clubs were in the West Ham area, the name West Ham United was chosen.
They originally played in Canning Town before moving to Plaistow and then eventually Upton Park.
