I have a friend in manchester who says there are rumours flying around there that manchester united have upped there bid for carrick to 15m that looks to be accepted by levy, has anyone else heard this rumour??
Carrick has so far not signed a new contract but does still have 2 years left so maybe there is some truth in this...and one must say its a decent offer, but one id like to see rejected, especially as man utd got 14m for nothing re jon obi mikel,so if they want him that much, we could still get more if we have to sell!

There is probably truth the story as its been in all the main newspapers over the last few days.
Telegraph June 13th, 2006: Manchester United were on the point of completing the signing of Michael Carrick last night after submitting an improved offer of £15 million to Tottenham.
Telegraph June 12th, 2006: Roy Keane has postponed retirement to play the last year of his contract with Celtic after taking specialist advice about his hip problem. Keane was told he will need a hip replacement operation in a few years' time, but playing another season will not cause further damage.
Telegraph June 10th, 2006: Tottenham are close to agreeing a £10 million fee with Manchester United for England midfielder Michael Carrick.

Mort, Tottenham have been linked with so many players since the season ended I really dont know anymore who they are genuinely after and who they're not. Think this will only get worse as the WC progresses and a few more players dazzle us all with their delights.
JTS you may have a point though

Mort, we already have Huddlestone (England U21) and Ghaly (an egyptian player), who can play the holding role. We are also linked with Didier Zakora of St Etienne and Ivory Coast. He looked good against Argentina. United were also interested in him, so we might be able to strike a hands off deal as part of the Carrick deal.
As someone pointed out elsewhere, Newcastle paid 16 million for Michael Owen, so 15 million for Carrick is not too bad if we can bring someone effective in. However, selling important players sends a bad message and sets a bad example. How long before offers come in for King.

who'd you prefer, carrick or zokara?? We know what Carrick can do and how he fits in the team, so any change is risky. It could work out for the best, but we do not need to sell. We should refuse Uniteds offer (unless for silly money, 20-25 million), but it may depend on how Carrick feels about a new contract and what he wants. Although I could see Carrick being very effective linking up with Rooney and Ronaldo, he would need a more physical partner in central midfield (e.g. a Zokora). The proposed partnership with Scholes seems lightweight as I can't see Ronaldo and Park helping with the hard work in the middle.
