Got my company appraisal later on today - basically, it's my chance to tell them how brilliant I am, how much they need me, and what I want in the future career-wise. Given that I've got a contract renewal any day now too, I reckon it's important I put in a good performance.
Thus, all you people who've been employed longer than me, I'm looking for tips here. I'm gonna say I wanna stay on in the company (loyalty - plus points, right?) and am gonna hint at wanting to go on a degree course and a foreign language course (either German or Japanese, since we're dealing with companies in both countries and I know a little of both languages too), which hopefully shows me to be an ambitious young worker etc.
Any tips for what other points I could push?

Well Neko when I was young and ambitious and wanted to get on, I used to tell them what they wanted to hear as you should do.
Nowadays I just tell them what I think.

Surely "pay rise" should be in there somewhere?! ![8-)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/cool.png) And don't forget to emphasise how really, really good you are (without sounding up yourself) - go for the efficiency, competence angle more than the "I am God" angle! ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

Always point out specific areas that you have developed in over the last year. Always try and find one area you feel you could improve on over the next year and summarise with the bits you want to do. Kind of a negative sandwich.
iam great.........I could do this batter.........i am really interested in doing this.

Yes Neil is right - I think the technical term is "shit sandwich" (you gotta love management jargon!!)

Just tell them how committed you are to continuous improvement, that kind of nonsense usually goes down well.

So efficiency, competence, improvement, future goals, with a touch of humility - that sounds do-able! ;D

Push the "I'd like to start taking on more responsibility" part! Show them that you have drive, resilience and ambition. However don't talk up bits that you obviously haven't done or excelled in. Also identify a weakness and ask their advice on how you can improve and get stronger in that field!

Also identify a weakness and ask their advice on how you can improve and get stronger in that field! Actually, I've just had a load of extra responsibility thrust onto me - the guy who used to upgrade, maintain, repair etc all the IT stuff in the department has just left, and I've been given his work as well as my own ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png) Guess it provides a talking point though! ;D

Do you have to collect evidence of good performance during the year???

Nope - there's only 20-25 in the department, so the boss has a pretty good idea of what projects I've been working on anyway. I can just add a few frills to make it sound even better ;D

Nope; it's just a discussion to establish my performance and future options. They will mark me out of five in various areas (communication, ability, teamwork etc) but there's no rigid rules per se.

Neko, the main theme etc., of this meeting has already been decided circa 2 months ago. However what you need to do is say where you want to be, within the company this has to realistic.
Also a good thing to do is to take feedback to the meeting, ie a supplier saying thank you etc., or a customer expressing their happiness with you for going that extra mile. Just proves you're the dogs bollocks and they can't live without you.
Also have a plan ie., training that you'd like to improve your general knowledge of what you do etc., this in turn shows you want to progress etc.,
Also ask this question, are you happy with me, do you think I need to improve in any areas etc., that way you get a feel for what they really think of you

you could also mention your cycling proficiency test results and how many pringles you can fit in your mouth in one go.
