Dead of cancer at 61
Before my time but scored the winner for Sunderland in one of the best cup finals of all time, my Mum tells me the story of a Leeds supporting friend of theirs who threw a chair across the University common room when he scored.
Was working as manager for Armenia until just before his death too, football was obviously his life
RIP Ian

RIP You weren't a very good manager for us but it is tragic that you've died so young.

Ian Porterfield was one of my heroes.
I used to tear round the school-yard screaming his..... or the Lord Rowell's name with every kick of the ball.
Although we knew he was gravely ill it was still A terrible shock last night. God bless Ian - you lived my dream.
