Being a Forest lad I have always followed the career of Roy Keane.
When Cloughie brought him over from Ireland (Cobbh Ramblers) as a young lad, he obviously saw something in him, and how right it proved.
When he got into the first team as a 17 year old you could see he was class and he took an awful lot of stick from some of the established players of the opposition.
Cloughie stuck by him and you could see his talent from match to match coming through and his confidence kept on growing. Within a couple of seasons the cloggers were now getting clogged.
Cloughie can take a lot of the credit for toughening this kid up but he can only take the credit for bringing out the raw talent that was already there inside of him.
That is now history because we all know what happened from then on. Love him or hate him everyone in football has talked about him, and since he first stepped out at Forest he learnt his trade very quickly and he knew where he wanted to go.
Like Cloughie, Roy can now show you a bag full of medals and say ‘Here are my GCE’s & A Levels!!!! Because like many footballers I don’t think Roy passed many exams and I don’t think academically he is the brightest pin.
And it's why I post this message, because I would dearly love to see him carry on in management where he left off playing. I don't want to see him in a few years time down the same road has the other great & successful player from United (Bryan Robson).
Robson for United or England has a player was great but I'm afraid he hasn't and will never make it has a successful manager but I really hope Roy can swing it around for Sunderland and bring back some of those glory days for you lads (and lasses) up there.
I think it's a huge gamble by Quinn to bring in a raw recruit to manage a big club like Sunderland but we all know what Cloughie went on to achieve, and who was it that found KEANO???
