Anti-racism campaigners have called for "appropriate" action over chants aimed at Middlesbrough striker Mido by Newcastle supporters. The Football Association are investigating an incident during Sunday's 2-2 Premier League draw between the derby rivals at the Riverside Stadium after the 24-year-old Egyptian was abused by travelling supporters.
Kick It Out, an organisation set up to tackle racism, has offered to work with the clubs and football's governing bodies in an attempt to produce a response.
A statement released on the campaign's website said: "Kick It Out is concerned at the reports of racial abuse directed at Mido during the Middlesbrough v Newcastle match this weekend.
"All of those involved in the game will be aware of the need to tackle racism and discrimination in all forms. Islamophobia is a dangerous and nasty form of racism.
"We will be working with our partners at the players' union, the PFA, the FA, Newcastle United and Middlesbrough to ensure an appropriate response to this incident.
"We will continue to campaign and raise awareness across the country of the potential for problems such as this to occur and to deliver long term awareness raising to combat discrimination of all kinds."
Mido was booked for his response to the chants from travelling supporters after scoring his side's first equaliser in the game.
In a highly-charged atmosphere, Newcastle striker Mark Viduka was given a hostile welcome on his return to the Riverside Stadium following his departure from the Teesside club at the end of last season.
