Gareth Southgate will have to wait until the end of November to see if he can continue as Middlesbrough manager. The Premier League chairmen amended their rules on Thursday allowing coaches who have started work on their Pro-Licence to manage in the league.
But Southgate has not started the A Licence course and is unable to embark upon the Pro-Licence until next summer.
His three-month dispensation runs out next week so talks are on-going to resolve the situation.
Middlesbrough's argument is that Southgate was playing until he was asked to succeed Steve McClaren and therefore had no time in which to gain his qualifications.

They are hoping their willingness to allow McClaren to leave his contract for England duties will also work in their favour.
During the summer Glenn Roeder was given special dispensation to take over at Newcastle despite not having the required Uefa Pro Licence.
The 50-year-old had initially been enrolled on the course during his time at West Ham when he was struck down by a brain tumour.
Southgate's situation is different because he has yet to start the A Licence course.
