LONDON (AFP) - English Premiership club Liverpool could be set for a takeover bid from the owner of Montreal's ice-hockey team.
Montreal Canadiens owner George Gillett is said to have met Liverpool chairman David Moores and chief executive Rick Parry in America earlier this month to open talks about a potential purchase of the five-times European champions.
The Daily Telegraph claims that American businessman Gillett is considering a 450 million pounds investment in the Anfield club, with most of the money ear-marked for the development of a new stadium and for signing new players.
However it was reported that Gillett's desire to employ his own people behind the scenes has not gone down well with life-long Liverpool fan Moores.
The Telegraph also claimed that Parry had also had informal discussions with Samir Ansari, head of Dubai International Capital, about a possible takeover and said Moores favoured that consortium ahead of Gillett.
Moores is believed to value Liverpool at around 200 million pounds but any buyer would need to find another 200 million pounds to build the club's planned new stadium.
Liverpool have been searching for overseas investment for several years without success and have been snubbed by several potential investors including Robert Kraft, who owns the NFL team New England Patriots, as well as a former Prime Minister of Thailand.

Maple Leaf fans would be just happy if they could get near the Stanley Cup final for once. But he plenty of money to burn esp.after the financial changes made for the NHL in 2005 to stop spiralling wages (nice if they could try it for most of the overpaid primadonnas). Prem football has a huge audience in Canada considering the fact most games are broadcast early in the morning over there . Must have had Gillet interested. Toronto I think are trying to enter MLS & interest in 'soccer' is rocketing.
