'I'M fit and ready to go' - that was the message to Cardiff City fans from Jason Koumas today as he prepares for his imminent move to Ninian Park.
The Echo understands that the Bluebirds are close to raising the £500,000 down-payment to trigger his £2m transfer from West Bromwich Albion.
And today Koumas was in a positive frame of mind, stating that he'll be fit and ready for Cardiff City's big kick-off if a deal is completed before Saturday's clash at Barnsley.
'I'm ready for the start of the season and I'm fit - make no mistake about it,' he said.
'I've covered miles jogging the streets and I've spent hours with the ball.
'I just can't wait to hear that whistle and start playing again for Cardiff.
'Okay, there is always the issue of match practice, but I'm champing at the bit and pumped up ready to start the season with Cardiff.
'I know what is expected of me and I've never felt so ready to start a season.
'Of course, it has not been an ideal situation, but I'm raring to go and to get on with playing football again.'
The Welsh international has been training alone through the summer after falling out with West Brom manager Bryan Robson.
His stance has cost him in excess of £40,000 in fines for his pre-season no-show and failure to make the club's trip to Scotland.
West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace has played hardball over any move to the Bluebirds after City played it tough over Robert Earnshaw's switch to The Hawthorns.
And the possible move of Cameron Jerome to the Midlands club in the summer, with Koumas coming the other way with an additional fee, also fell through.
The eventual sale of Jerome to arch-rivals Birmingham City only fanned the flames of a fiery set of negotiations.
Now, though, the final details on any move are still to be ironed out, and there is a possibility of a clause in his contract not allowing him to play against West Brom at Ninian Park a week today.
Another possibility is that the Baggies could stall on the talks and final terms until after Robson's side's date at Ninian Park, freezing out the player from any involvement on what will already be a highly-charged night of football.
But with City meeting in full the £2m asking price, manager Dave Jones will want Koumas available for the opening games of the season - both at Barnsley and against West Brom, City's first home match.
Koumas has already expressed his desire to play for City and, while West Brom still hold the upper hand in this long and drawn-out saga, it appears City will soon be able to give the 26-year-old his wish.
'I've never known anything like this,' said the former Tranmere player about the whole summer of talks.
'It's gone past the frustrating stage.
'All I know is that I've kept myself in good shape through the summer and stepped up my training to twice a day.
'I'm just ready for the start of the season now and I want to start it soon - in Cardiff City's colours.'
