Cardiff City's quest to hang on to Jason Koumas will receive a huge boost if West Bromwich Albion are relegated from the Premiership, it emerged today.
The Echo has discovered that the Welsh international midfielder, on-loan to City from Albion, is among a clutch of Baggies players who will have their wages halved if the club go down.
That means Koumas' salary at The Hawthorns, where he has two years left on his contract, would drop from around £10,000 to £5,000 a week making it far easier for the Bluebirds to negotiate personal terms for a permanent deal to keep him this summer.
It is understood both clubs have already opened talks about the transfer, and that the fee at present is likely to be no more than £1m.
Koumas, 26, is not wanted by Albion manager Bryan Robson, who has made it clear the former Tranmere star will not play again under his leadership.
And the player has already spoken of his desire to stay at City - he is happy playing under manager Dave Jones and living in South Wales.
Cardiff City would not make any comment today, but a source at Albion confirmed that the clause to cut pay by 50 per cent is in most players' contracts at the club.
Albion, who narrowly avoided the drop last season, find themselves in another desperate battle to stay up, lying one place above the relegation zone and three points above rivals Birmingham, but having played a game more.
Their survival hopes were dealt another blow in a 2-1 defeat at Tottenham on Monday.

Sheffield United or Reading if both promoted, who would he choose mmmmmmmm. i doubt we'd go for him anyway, midfields not the problem Reading are a much more attractive club to play for. Better infrastructure, better current team, geograpically more appealing, and richer. Also potential to have a much bigger fan base as we don't have any big local rivals.
