I said I wasn't going to watch the match because I always find England very frustrating to watch but when I heard that we were winning 1-0 and playing well I couldn't resist but to turn on the TV. Glad I did, I thought that the decision to bring Heskey back paid off. Owen proves again he is a proven goal scorer and is starting to look sharp again. Wright - Phillips, Mica Richards both excellent performances. Gerrard although quiet, one or two great touches especially when he linked up with Joe Cole to almost produce a goal. Bit disappointed that we resorted to the long ball when Johnson came on, must have been frustrating for him, although he did control one through ball to him and set up Owen who almost scored for imo the best move of the match.
You may say it was only Israel but they don't really concede too many goals and to be honest we could have scored 6 or 7, so on the whole a satisfying performance and hopefully a big boost of confidence to the team because they are going to need it against Russia.

Russia had a player sent off today aswell so that is another big plus for us, i dunno how vital he is for them but still one less player for them!

Obviously a key player if he's in the starting line up but on the day I don't think it's about how Russia perform because we are easily capable of beating them, its about how we perform.

It was there number 2 keeper (number 1 keeper is injured) so we'll be up against there number 3 bloke on wednesday, though he did save a penno today! With regards to england, i thought it was the best all round performance in a while and Barry and SWP were terrific! Keep that performance on wednesday and we'll be fine!

Don't think anyone can have any complaints, even Heskey did well today, lets have a repeat against Russia who will attack a lot more than Israel

Heskey, Barry and SWP won't win too many more caps as they played too well.
Barry showed he can pass the ball better than most, although it'll be intersting to see how he performs against a better team, I hope he plays well again and Lampard gets relegated to the bench, but we all know that aint gonna happen.

Thought Heskey was excellent, done the job he was asked to do with little fuss and won nearly everything that was thrown at him, shooting was a little suspect but that always been the case, the layoff with his chest to Owen was superb and I for one would not be surprised to see him start on Wednesday in front of Crouch. Granted he his not the long term answer but if he can put in another performance like Saturdays it will be job done.

Granted he his not the long term answer but if he can put in another performance like Saturdays it will be job done. To be fair, Heskey's never really depended on pace, so he could still continue playing at the same level even in another 4 years' time (33yrs old). I don't think, at international, you want to look too much longer-term than that, else you reach the point where you're saying a 27yr-old winger's not gonna be at his prime in the future! I think the big thing here is that, while Heskey's certainly not a better individual than Rooney or Ashton, and certainly Crouch and Nugent can be argued to be better too, he just works best with our #1 striker - and people have been shrieking for ages about how it's about selecting the best team. People still had a go at McClaren even when he did that, but hopefully now they'll give him a little breathing space - and maybe he'll realise it's not all about big names! Now we just have to hope Heskey doesn't start getting lazy again
