Egyptian international Mohamed Abdelwahab collapsed and died on the pitch during a training session.
The 23-year-old defender, who helped Egypt win the Afican Cup of Nations this year, collapsed 35 minutes into a training session with his club Ahly.
"He did not clash with another player, he just fall on the ground," a club spokesman told BBC Sport.
He was rushed to hospital but died before arriving, a cause of death is yet to be established.
"It might be a heart attack but we are not sure yet," the team doctor said.
His death caused has sent a shockwave of sadness amongst the public.
The player was yet to play an official match with his Egyptian club this season after he refused to rejoin his club Al Dafraa from Emirates, who did not want to to sell him to Ahly.
He had spent two years with the Cairo-based club and helped them to win the African Champions League last year.
Fifa were planning to investigate the dispute between the two clubs next month.
