Seth Johnson will be offered the chance to join Hull City - but only if he can prove his long-term fitness.
The former England international, who was released by Derby County last week, underwent minor surgery today in a bid to assess the extent of a long-standing knee injury.
If the results are encouraging, Johnson looks certain to join former Derby manager Phil Brown at the KC Stadium.
Johnson started Derby's play-off game at Wembley, but having sustained a blow to the same knee that has plagued his career, fears have grown over whether the 28-year-old would play again this year.
Brown admits he will be interested in taking the experienced midfielder on board, but denied already offering him a deal.
"There's some truth in the fact we've been monitoring Seth closely for a while now, but there's no truth that we've offered him a two-year deal" Brown told the Mail.
"I understand he's undergoing a minor operation today and we will await the results of that before taking it any further.
Hopefully if the injury is not as serious as some people have suggested, then we can sit down with the player. Of course, any move will hinge on what we find out today."
Johnson was one of Brown's first signings when he took over at Derby County in June 2005.
"City attempted to secure Johnson's signature six months ago, with Brown admitting to being a long-time admirer."

A good signing? A good bit of experience for our young-ish squad?
