Great to see him back at Thorp Arch... I'd have him back at Leeds in an instant if I found £13m down the back of the sofa.

Woody back at United! Treatment and a cheer for the lads EXCLUSIVE BY PAUL DEWS LEEDS UNITED'S promotion dreams today received a ringing endorsement from Elland Road old boy Jonathan Woodgate. The Real Madrid star has returned to United's Thorp Arch training ground to continue his rehabilitation on back and hamstring injuries suffered during the Galacticos' Champions League clash with Arsenal in February. The 26-year-old expects to be in England for between four and eight weeks and is hoping to cash in on his return home by supporting Leeds in their play-off campaign. "Hopefully I'll get to the play-off games," said Woodgate. "The physio staff here have got me working from 9am until 6pm or 7pm at night, but I'd like to watch the play-off games. "It'll be a great experience for everyone involved at the club. I hope I get to see them. "I hope the club gets back to the Premier League. It would be great watching a club I love so much get promoted." Woodgate is working closely with the Leeds physio team ? Real Madrid officials have given their stamp of approval ? and the defender is back on familiar ground. "I wouldn't say it's strange being back because I was here for so long before," he said. "I've come back to get treatment from some of the best physios in Europe. "The staff at Madrid are fantastic ? they have been over here ? and they are happy for me to spend time working at Leeds. "The whole staff here are brilliant. They know what they are doing and I have a lot of trust in them ? as do the people at Madrid. "I'm working on different exercises and I'm trying to get myself right again." The sale of Woodgate for £9m in January 2003 was the first sign of the club's serious financial problems ? and his unexpected departure sparked outrage. Former manager Terry Venables threatened to resign on principle, United fans turned on ex-chairman Peter Ridsdale and called for his resignation, and the memory of a tearful Woodgate heading to Newcastle still holds with many. "I started here has a schoolboy and I grew up here," he explained. "Eventually I moved on. I'd never asked to be sold or anything like that, it was the situation at the club at the time. "There's been a lot of changes since I left, but there are still a few people here from when I was here and it's been good to catch up with some old faces. "There are a few people behind the scenes and on the playing side there's Gary Kelly, Eirik Bakke, Matty Kilgallon and Frazer Richardson. "It's good. Leeds will never lose the place it has in my heart. "And it is good to be back with family and friends."Injury Woodgate's Newcastle career lasted 19 months before Real made a £13.4m swoop for the highly-rated defender. But a thigh injury ruled him out for the entire 2004-05 season and after making a crazy debut that saw him score an own goal and receive a red card, he picked up an injury against Arsenal in the Champions League clash at the Bernabeu. The current season is now over for Woodgate ? but the defender insists he is determined to regain his fitness and make an impact in Spain. "When I'm not fit I'm not happy because there's no better feeling than playing for Real Madrid," he said. "When you play it's perfect. It's such a great club with great players. "I'd been out for a long time with injury and that was tough ? my debut was just one of those things." Woodgate, a product of the United Academy, is constantly being linked with a Newcastle return and his future has been the subject of much speculation since he stepped off the plane in Spain. The player has hinted in the past that he would like to end his career in Leeds and he laughed: "You never know what's going to happen. "Look what happened last time. I never even knew I was going! "Things happen in football very quickly. "Look at Leeds and the Champions League and relegation. "You never know what happens in the future ? but I have to say I am very happy where I am."
