Leeds announce new radio deal Leeds chairman Ken Bates has announced the forthcoming launch of new digital radio station Yorkshire Radio. Bates, who sold Chelsea to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich for a reported £140milion in the summer of 2003, is the mastermind behind the venture - "a unique station for a unique county" - which will broadcast 24 hours a day, seven days a week from its Elland Road base.
"I'm delighted to say, even before we've started transmitting, we've attracted sponsorship well into five figures," said Bates, who will head a five-man board of directors.
"It will be a bit different to other stations, more exciting and interesting, there will be more one-on-ones for example and it won't just go behind the scenes at Elland Road, we'll be taking a look at what's happening throughout Yorkshire.
"There are far more people who watch or play local football than those who watch Leeds, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday and Bradford - we want to give them a platform. We'll also be covering rugby union, rugby league and cricket, plus there will be good music. We hope there will be something for everyone.
"I'd also like to thank Chelsea Football Club for selling us all the equipment! They didn't know they were selling it to Leeds - it was acquired via a third party for a fraction of what it would cost on the open market. So I'd like to thank Mr Abramovich for his unintentional goodwill towards Yorkshire Radio."

Looking forward to this, read about it in the programme at the game last Saturday, plus Elland rd is plastered with adverts for this everywhere. It looks interesting. I wonder if Mr Bates is planning on licensing the match commentary to his new station and revoking the license that Radio Leeds currently holds. Wonder if Ken Bates will guest DJ a Sunday afternoon easy listening session a la Jimmy Saville in the early 80s ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

Bear in mind that there's no guarantee that match commentary will be on this station, (although it seems likely that the BBC contract will not be renewed.) Knowing Mr Bates I doubt the streaming will be free over the internet, it will probably be chargeable in a similar way to how it is now. This radio station though will have a powerful transmitter, and will transmit all the way up to Darlington and all the way down to Derbyshire/Notts, so if you aren't too far North or South, you may still be able to pick it up.

As Bates' said in the programme for the Plymouth game, taking off the cover price off the new bi-monthly magazine means that membership would only cost an additional £12 per year, (assuming you actually want the magazines!) Because of this, I doubt the internet streaming would also be free, as the membership is already a very good deal.
