Donald Trump is being sued by an Apprentice reject who claims the 60-year-old billionaire businessman discriminated against him because of his age.
Richard Hewett, who was 49 when he was turned away from the US TV reality contest in July 2005, alleges only two of the finalists in six series have been over 40 and that Trump and the show's producers have violated America's Age Discrimination in Employment Act.
"People watching it get the impression that if you want to work for a big organisation like the Trump Organisation you have to be young," technology manager Mr Hewett, from Hampstead, New Hampshire, said in an interview.
But the real estate mogul disputed the claims.
"We have had very few people over a certain age apply to be on the show," Trump said.
"If they did and we liked them, we would love to cast them on the show.
His spokesman, Jim Dowd, said a "minuscule percentage" of the more than a million applicants had been over 40, and finalists had ranged in age from 21 to 41.
Mr Hewett's suit seeking unspecified damages, filed last week in US District Court, also names the show's British producer Mark Burnett and his company, Mark Burnett Productions.
NBC, the US network that airs The Apprentice, is not named as a defendant.
