High-regarded goalkeeper Matthew Gilks signed a new two-year contract in the summer of 2005 and will look to continue the excellent form he showed during the 2004/05 campaign. Such was the form of the keeper that interest from higher division clubs soon followed and it came as no surprise such was the form he was showing. Despite this interest manager Steve Parkin convinced Gilks his immediate future lay at Spotland and it was a real boost to everybody connected to the club when Gilks did sign on the dotted line.
Gilks initially started his Rochdale career in the club's Centre of Excellence. He duly progressed up the ladder before eventually being offered a professional contract with the club and after years of being understudy to various senior keepers, it wasn't until last season that he really made the number 1 jersey his own.
Following an injury to Neil Edwards he took his opportunity with both hands and went on to keep an impressive 15 clean sheets in just 30 appearances. Along with the 5 clean sheets kept by Edwards before his injury, it meant the duo equalled Chris Harker's Post-War club record for number of clean sheets kept in a league campaign.
Gilks is a tall and commanding goalkeeper who patrols his box with tremendous authority. He is an excellent shot-stopper with all the attributes to play the game at the highest level. He has matured tremendously in recent years and his form attracted the attention of the likes of Bolton and Norwich but Steve Parkin persuaded him to sign a new two-year contract in the summer of 2005.
