Monday night against Leeds promises to be interesting viewing for the neutral. I think you have the slightest of advantages going into the game, because youre on home soil, and generally you are difficult to beat at Deepdale, especially if its a full house.
But Im not ruling Leeds out by any means. They have a number of players that will cause you problems like Lewis, Healy, Hulse and Blake. And I think Blackwell will feel that his team are still in without a shout, especially if the 4,000 or so Leeds fans travelling(guesswork) are in high spirits. But they will miss the commanding Paul Butler dearly for the trip to Deepdale, though you'd hope Gregan and Killgallon would be able to fill the void. Miller and Derry will certainly provide Leeds with some desire in the midfield.
There is no doubt that Preston are a good side, built on a solid defence. Carlo Nash is a useful goalkeeper and is well supported by centre backs, Claude Davis and Youl Mawene, who are strong and pacy. Graham Alexander, Tyrone Mears and Callum Davidson also have performed solidly in the previous two seasons. O'Neil and McKenna bring solidarity and steel to the midfield. And of course you have the likes of Nugent, Sedgwick and Ormerod on the attacking front, which can cause any Championship defence a problem or so.
There promises to be some interesting tussles all over the field.
Billy Davies has done a great job in his two seasons as manager to guide you PNE boys to two back-to-back play off campaigns. Last year, you held off my beloved Rams, only to lose out to West Ham. This year, I think Leeds will be a much stiffer test, who are steadily heading towards good times under Blackwell, who has been aided by a much needed injection of transfer funds by chairman Ken Bates. And if they fail to get past you, they will certainly be in the mix-up against next season.
Personally I hope you go to Cardiff, because I thought you were one of the better footballing sides to come to Pride Park this season and certainly outclassed us for large periods of the game and you deserve it for being a consistent outfit. And also, I would love to visit Elland Road again next season, despite it being a ground we never really prosper on. Selfish I know.
Anyways, good luck to you Preston fans, may your hopes of Premiership football live on.
