Southampton have revealed they have spent £100m in players' and coaches' wages in four and a half years.
Over the period from June 2001 until November 2005, the club's debt increased by £5.8m to £20m.
Managing director Andrew Cowen told the club's website: "It is quite an eye-opener in many ways, particularly the amount spent on wages.
"The Bosman ruling has bitten and caused a reduction in the number of in-contract transfers."
Cowen continued: "This has a big effect on wages which is something fans don't see. They only look at the transfer fees but there are a lot of add-ons in terms of salaries, loyalty bonuses, agents' fees and the five per cent league levy on all transfer fees."
The news comes as the Saints revealed details of their finances in respond to demands from supporters about the club's financial situation.

clubs normally only show financial details when their owners are looking to sell the club on, which could mean Lowe on his way out?

Just a quick post to say thanks for these facts.
I'm reading through the threads one by one.
I'd heard talk of this but until now, no actual proof.
Staggering, isn't it!

On a slightly more amusing note, I've come over from 606.
The reason I didn't read is sooner is that on there, the posting would have read like this!
Re; saint's in the red! (even more)
They're wearing red on Saturday.
