No rant from me on this one - I saw this post on a Watford forum and thought it'd put the message across better than I could.
This is getting silly now. I've had enough of all the drama queens wanting Aidy sacked and players sacked and board members sacked. It's just ridiculous.
Yes, this season has been a total and utter disaster. We've spent money on crap players and we've seemingly lost all tactical cohesion. Morale is at rook bottom. But before that we've had two really good seasons and Aidy saved our team from it's nosedive into League 1 after Loosington nearly took us down.
The truth is people aren't being objective. Everyone is reacting because, to put it simply, they've had their hearts broken. People have been saying 'when' while talking about the Premiership since last summer, even when Aidy tried to dampen down expectations and remind people how tricky this league is.
The fans have been right canuting canuts all season - too many people expecting too much from a pretty average bunch of players. Booing when a team pretty high on confidence early in the season drew a couple of home matches when the luck went against them. Expecting ole football when what we had worked perfectly well. Criticising a bunch of players for not being world beaters. And now calling for crap players to come in like they'd be our saviours, when it's obvious to everyone it'd just be like moving deckchairs on the titanic (and then calling for the same players they asked to be dropped to come back and replace them...)
And now for that old favourite - the 'people should remember where we've come from' line. It's as true now as ever. I don't deny we had a chance to get up this season and make a crack of it. That chance is gone automatically now and it'll take a supreme effort to make anything of it in the play-offs. We'll probably be Championship next season. But so what? It's a decent division and away from the stuck up Premiership attitudes.
So where do we go from here? If we sack Aidy three things will happen:
(1) a nice cheque for c£1.5m goes to Aidy and his staff by way of compensation payments for their sackings
(2) another nice cheque for a reasonable amount goes to another club for their manager
(3) the remainder of our parachute and redevelopment money goes to a new manager who will need a kitty to potentially waste on dumpers too
It becomes a 'promotion-or-bust' season, a la Luca. If it comes off then great, if not you better get saving again because the Buy Back the Vic Fund will be reinstated double time. Or we do the sensible thing. People admit that Aidy has made a right pigs ear of this season and give him chance to put it right. I'm sure he knows that there needs to be a clearout and I'm sure the board will insist on an experienced old hand coming in to help out. Aidy's budget will be defined by what he can bring in via sales.
Then we wait and see. People do some supporting for once, rather than always waiting for the team to start it. If things don't work out next season I think Aidy will admit it's in the best interests of both parties if he leaves and starts afresh. We save a wad of money because compensation is lesser and we've had no outlay on a whole new squad. People like me, who still believe in Aidy can accept it's not working and the negatives - well, you're never happy Of course if we're in 21st come next October then he can say bye bye on the spot. I've no qualms about that.
But at the moment I can't help thinking if people get their way and boo Aidy out of the club it'll be Leeds who benefit. And no one wants that...
