England's selectors have dropped Geraint Jones from the Test squad after 31 consecutive Test appearances, giving a recall instead to Chris Read. Jones was suffering a hairline fracture to his right ring-finger but it has been decided that Read should be given another chance as wicket-keeper.
But chairman of selectors David Graveney said: "The selectors feel this is the right time to make a change."
"Geraint has kept very well this summer, but he has been short of runs."
Read, 27, has had two previous spells with the gloves in England's Test squad, but was dropped in April 2004 during the West Indies tour for Jones to make his debut in Antigua.
But the Nottinghamshire player has put pressure on Jones this season, scoring 601 runs at an average of 42.92, with three centuries.
Read said: "I felt that I kept well in the West Indies two years ago, but I knew that if was I going to get back in the Test side I would have to work on my batting because I hadn?t scored enough runs.
"So I made a conscious effort to look at my batting and analyse where I can improve.
" have worked hard with the help of Mick Newell and Paul Johnson at Nottinghamshire as well as the staff at the ECB National Academy.
"Things have gone well for me and I feel that I have reaped the rewards by scoring well in both first class and one-day cricket over the last couple of seasons."
I was saying just this in the second test thread, Jones lack of runs may cost a trip to OZ.

It's the only sensible thing too do. Jones needs some time in county cricket to play himself back in to form. By the end of the season he'll have scored a couple of hundreds and feel much more confident about himself.
It also allows the selectors to have a look at Read, whose batting at country level has improved dramatically since his last cap. Read has the chance to stake a claim to be no1 but he only has a maximum of 3 tests to prove himself.
Well done selectors, something right for once. ;D

I feel kind of sorry for him, he's put up with so much from the media and he's damned if he does and he's damned if he doesn't. His wicket keeping's improved immensly, but I suppose he was brought in as a batsman, so I guess it's the right time for a change.

His wicket keeping's improved immensly, but I suppose he was brought in as a batsman, so I guess it's the right time for a change. The simple fact is he was brought in for his batting. No matter how much hiskeeping improves he'll never be as good as Read. If Read can average at least 35 for the rest of the series he should be 1st choice for the Ashes. If he doesn't and G-Unit gets some form back then he should return, simple.

You got to remember Read was first choice and playing well until the injury and GERIANT JONES came in and played superb. Give Read a chance and if he's a shite, we still got quility in Jones

Well, we've won the toss decided to bat, currently 31-0.
Like this little quote from CMJ on TMS
Sami is like the girl in the nursery rhyme - when he's good, he's very good, when he's bad he's horrid..."

And from listening to the commentary over the lunch period it sounds like we had a couple of escapes as well with caught behind decisions.

A decent score nevertheless. Now to break the 3rd wicket partnership and get amongst them!
