Not surprised by this in the slightest - he knows the MLS (and thus most of the US squad) very well, he lives and works out there anyway, and taking Germany to 3rd in the World Cup is hardly a shoddy detail on his CV. Not exactly a huge queue of top-notch American coaches either, so why not go for a foreigner? I wonder what sort of goals US Soccer have set him? If they're willing to give him time, he could well overhaul the US system the way he did Germany's, which can only benefit them in the long run. As a side note, it looks on mlssoccer.com like he was the fans' choice, and in the poll they have running, 45% of the respondees say reaching the quarter-finals of the 2014 WC will be considered a success, which sounds fair to me (though 9% say winning in 2014 would be all they'd consider as success! )
