Championship rivals battle for defender
Last updated: 27th January 2010
Skysports.com understands Sheffield United are hoping to beat Coventry to the signing of West Brom defender Leon Barnett.
Barnett is currently on loan at Coventry after falling out of favour at the Hawthorns.
West Brom are prepared to offload the 24-year-old and Coventry have expressed a desire to turn his loan deal into a permanent move.
However, Sheffield United are now planning to hijack the move with Blades boss Kevin Blackwell keen to bring in defensive cover.
Blackwell has targeted a move for Barnett as he seeks to fill the void left by Matt Kilgallon's departure to Sunderland.

No idea how he's been this season, but certainly when he left us and the season after at WBA, he was very good - not great then, but then he was 21/22 at the time. Showed a hell of a lot of potential, though, and we were gutted to lose him.
