Argentina Apertura 2009: Week 17: Brilliant Banfield on the brink.

This years Argentine Apertura is edging towards its finale...and it's not the usual suspects involved at the top. We have a refreshing change with a straight fight between Banfield and Newell's for the championship crown.

Elsewhere, River and Boca will be glad to see the end of the current campaign, as neither club will be competing in the Copa Libertadores when it kicks off in the new year. The sides who shall be competing in it are: Lanús, Colón, Banfield, Newell's, Vélez (Clausura champions) and Estudiantes (defending champions). Estu have already ended their season, having played their games ahead of the rest of the pack due to their presence in the World Club Cup.

Relegation wise - Chacarita are already gone, while Gimnasia, Godoy Cruz and Atlético Tucumán are the candidates to join them.

Banfield are deserved winners. They went something like 15 games unbeaten before they finally lost to Racing towards the end.

Had Newell's won it I don't think there could have been too many complaints either as they and Banfield were very consistent. It was a close call at the end

Amazing to think neither Boca or River will be playing in the Libertadores next season.

I'm really looking forward to this years Copa. Without a lot of big names it looks to be a different one than usual.
