At the time, I thought it was a crazy decision and made a point of going to the tunnel to clap the Barnsley players off. They didn't deserve it having just subjected to an embarrassing stuffing. It was nice that so many Argyle fans stayed and did the same and that it was acknowledged by the Barnsley players who must have been feeling far from good humoured about it.
Within minutes, though, all hell let loose. I ducked back into the stadium to shelter from the storm along and watched the pitch flood over. It didn't show any signs of stopping so I braved it and by the time I'd reached the bottom of the park to head for the car people were coming back to say it was impassable. I didn't have much choice so just had to wade through, along with an old boy who would have struggled in on his own. Then walking up the other side of the hill towards my car the path had turned into a full flowing river - it wasn't knee deep anymore but genuinely so fast moving that as it hit my legs it was spraying into my face.
I'm full of sympathy for the Barnsley people but had that game gone on another two minutes somebody could have been seriously damaged. The referee got it right.
The other bit hidden in the fuss is just how bad we were. Just shockingly, shockingly bad. Larrieu failed to cope to an extent not previously seen; Timar was just hopeless and, after that, if Gary Sawyer still has the front to ask for a better deal he shoudl be sacked. He should be begging us to pay him anything at all after his performance.
It was an unusual day...

;D
From gloom to glee with the sweep of a ref's hand! I was actually under shelter for a short while with Gordon Sparkes (the commentator). Couldn't get a word in edgeways though and braved the rain rather than hold out for a chat...

i'm sure that if an abandon game has made it to the 60th minute the "result" stands....
.... the ref abandon the game in 58 minute, hmmm....

Somebody else told me the 70th, someone else the 80th, someone else the 89th minute. Definitive answer anybody?
If it is a conspiracy theory, whoever is culpable did bloody well to organise the rain that fell as the match was abandoned!

I think it's actually discretionary - i.e. if one team is clearly ahead, then the match can be given a firm result. Even then, it's not certain - there's one occasion in Luton's history where we were 6-0 down and the match was abandoned, and we got a replay out of it! (Which we won ;D)
As another example; Chester's abandoned match last weekend was abandoned on 75mins IIRC, but they're still awaiting a decision on how it should be awarded, as was the case last season for Gateshead when their match was abandoned.

Whilst it's funny to point and laugh at Barnsley, I actually feel very sorry for them. It's a long way to go to be hammering a very poor team and then to walk away with nothing. I fully unstand that the pitch was unplayable as the match went on but it's got to be a bugger that the players have now got to fit this in midweek nearer the end of the season and travel hundreds of miles again.

I agree with you completely but at the same time can't see that Steve Claridge's idea to come all the way down to play the last half hour in front of a crowd of nobody makes any sense either. It certainly holds no water for me...

In fact we have found a way to share something even worse than failure. We are the dark end of the Championship for sure...

i remember once reading that the only times the actual result at the time of the abandonment has stood was Bradford City v Lincoln City in May 1985 and as Mort mentioned 'The Battle of Bramall Lane'
i would be rediculous to replay this game though.......0-0 or 1-0 maybe but at 4-1 down the result was almost guarenteed....

In reality I think few of us could have complained. In fact we were lucky not to be down 7-1 and potentially we could have abandoned, the result stood and we would have benefitted from what could have been a huge hit on our goal difference.

The fact is that if a match is Abandoned, at no matter what time, whether its after one minute, or with one minute left, the game gets replayed from the start. Therefore I have even more sympathy towards Barnsley as they could end up losing a game they were certain to win..............................

I've got a book of weird football matches and it has a match in when Luton were 6-2 down to Man City and won a replay 3-1 after it was abandoned. Another match had Barrow leading Gillingham 7-0 after 75 minutes and that was allowed to stand. That one could happened after Gillingham tried to make the journey on the matchday itself for a 5:15 kickoff, got stuck in traffic, had to change their course to London, charter a plane to Manchester and drive the final 70 miles on bad roads around Morecambe Bay to make a delayed kick-off of 5:30 so they really weren't in the best state of mind by the time they arrived! With Sheffield United vs West Brom, was that an abandonment or a forfeit? It wasn't called off due to bad playing conditions, it was called off as Sheffield United had lost the players and couldn't complete the match. Argyle players and supporters travel hundreds of miles for EVERY away match - it's high time someone else had a taste of it! ;D The lacrosse team at Aber Uni have to make long journeys every week. Other teams apparently complained to BUSA about the journey there being too long so it was decided that Aber can't play home games and must travel each week. It's obviously not considered too much to ask them to make that journey each matchday but unfair to ask others to make the journey once a year.
