It just occurred to me as I saw yet anothe Wii advert this time for table tennis ..why ?
Surely for many of these Wii games why not go out and actually play the game for real ?
Wii football ? Wii tennis ? I can understand certain games such as F1, where anyone would be lucky to get in a real F1 car with all those fast tax dodgers.
Surely we should be encouraging kids to take up the real game when the facilities are there instead of keeping them indoors.
Sure you get physically active but is it an ersatz experience ?

You could say the same thing about a lot of games. FIFA and Pro, why don't people just go out and play football? NHL games, why not go and play ice hockey somewhere? All of these games are on all three platforms. There are tennis games out there on each platform too.
If the point you're getting at, is for people to get out and try these things for real, then the Wii might actually be doing people a favour. Poor example yes, but a child could be looking to take up a sport, such as tennis, but unsure whether he'd be good at it, or whether he'd like it. Give a tennis game a whirl on the Wii, yes it's not completely the same, but if the child enjoys it, and enjoys how it feels, he/she would be more inclined to get involved in real-life.
It could easily be seen almost like a tester for each sport, and in any case, it's just a bit fun, for people who perhaps can't be arsed to go out and do anything!

You also assume that there's facilities available for people who want to take up those sports - I don't know of anywhere in Luton that offers table tennis, for instance. You also have to assume you have someone to play against, and favourable conditions in the case of outdoor games...
I'm also reminded of an argument I heard re: Guitar Hero:
"Instead of playing that game, why don't you go and learn to play guitar?" "Because I can't afford a guitar, I don't want to spend months practicing when I only see it as a little leisure activity, and at any rate I'm shit at it. Guitar Hero's a quick fix that provides the fun and fantasy without the effort and expense."
Seems like a relevant point for this debate!

As a former NHL franchise player there's nowhere near here to ever try the sport so fair points Neko and Alex. But re some of these sports it's pretty cheap to get a racket or football and have a knock up or kickabout down the park with your mates.
