Chester City face the prospect of not being allowed to start the new season after having their licence application refused by the Football Association.
City went into administration in May, following their second demotion from the Football League in nine years.
The Blue Square Premier club were then bought back by their former chairman Stephen Vaughan.
But BBC Sport understands that the FA have concerns over the set-up of the new company.
FA compliance officer Neil Prescott has been in touch with the club to advise that they should cancel their pre-season friendlies.
And if, as expected, the FA do not allow them to start the new campaign on 9 August, then the future of the club, who were already due to start next season under a 10-point penalty, would be in doubt.
