Generally the concensus amongst football gamers is that EA's FIFA series has caught PES. Seabass has realised this and expanded the development team. Perhaps they have done a Brawn by negelecting PES2009 and working on a new code entirely for PES2010. The PR leaks and news are all encouraging thus far with the Europa League License secured exclusively,a revamped ML promised and more animations and physics particulatrly for the goalkeepers. This has always happenend in previous years so until we see gameplay examples later this year we can only speculate. But hopefully PES will buck up its act and return to its pre-eminent position and in turn force EA to improve. Lionel Messi will be the main endorsement figure for PES2010 which is one coup Konami have made. www.gamingaccess.com/VideoGames/ProEvolutionSoccer2010/news/19378If PES2010 does fail I will move to FIFA .

PES2010 looks to have recaptured the magic of the PES franchise and certainly on the PC platform the demo 75% code kicks FIFA2010 into touch. Played the PES2010 demo 75% code and playing as Barca v Liverpool, Liverpool played like they do sitting back hitting on the counter with Barca playing a neat fast passing game. The keeper's still need some work and unfortunately the same running animation is still in but crucially gameplay is excellent so far. The animations are beter appreciated in replay such as Gourcuff looking over his shoulder before receiving a pass and putting it into that direction. The scripting of the last two horror installments is gone and you have to work on placing your defenders and attackers and delivering the cross or placing the shot has that unique PES feel back. The ball connects with the players. There are a wealth of tactical sliders to shape the game to your style of play. www.youtube.com/watch?v=mF_77y1NRywwww.youtube.com/watch?v=VWmgHL5PbMEThere are numerous PES2010 demo videos now up. On PC PES2010 kicks the awful FIFA2010 into touch. www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJkL8BHDNy0Graphics are unbelievable inc.shirt flapping in the wind. EA seem to disregard the PC platform which is odd considering most PCs have superior CPUs to the PS3 and X360. They discontinued the NHL series which I used to play but never bothered with after 2006 and Madden. More pity the fools. Next years PES2011 with a new engine entirely should be even more revelatory. The winningeleven blog just google it has far more information.

D'loaded the free demo for this on the PS3 today...me likey! What I've always enjoyed about PES over Fifa is the sense of space and depth. Fifa always feels like you're flicking a pea around on a little model table, and PES actually feels like you're moving over a big, expansive pitch so long balls and the like feel far more genuine. Take chips on Fifa for instance - there's not really enough room to do them, so they come up and down really synthetically, like an upside down U or something. It may not be perfect, but PES just seems to capture the excitement of football for me. Fifa's maybe pushing harder for the realism aspect, but where their system is still flawed in a number of ways, it becomes very frustrating to play. PES, however, is just good old fashioned Jap-fun.

Played more of the PES2010 demo and it's growing on me as a worthy sucessor to PES6 which is the last iteration I liked and have been forced to play as PES2008/9 were quite frankly shite. An enormous number of new subtle animations have been introduced. Gameplay is challenging and you wil find players find it harder to control the ball when at speed and dependent on their ability . The individiual nature of players comes through. You'll have to play the demo to see this in action. Using the sliders does have an effect. The full back ie Alves makes runs inside out for instance when it is raised but losing 0-1 to Liverpool pushing the attacking slider and player support sliders resulted in a Liverpool conter causing Torres to streak clear ahead of a labouring Pique (no AI catchup) and chip it in over Valdes. Its a rewarding experience. The animations can be a bit slow in transit (but that has been cleared up in the reviewers 90% code) and the game is free flowing with 360 degree movement using the right analog stick and is hard to master at first and is noticeable and controlled. www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxsKX6C1TRgA very small selection of the huge number of new animations ie for shooting there are at least half a dozen basic foot positions . www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fiwnng7pzHIwww.youtube.com/watch?v=IvQIQZezWG4www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7lNONnuD3Ewww.youtube.com/watch?v=WKJgh5LwlhQwww.youtube.com/watch?v=4rUMMAdBPKcThe animations are great though and realistic such as Puyol desperately trying to prevent the ball going out hooking the ball to Pique but in the process losing his balance and falling on his backside. Completely lifelike. Control of crosses is precise now and lofted passes as well inc.one lovely deep ball played by Abidal out to Henry hugging the touchline. Gamespeed on PC is slow-slow-fast ie perfect. However the goalkeeper animations need work as does their positioning on balls floated to the extreme edge of the box (though I did head one clear using manual control)and their tendency to prefer to punch (though effective ) over catching and the collisions. This has been updated in the newer 90% code and hopefully been completely solved. I did manage to get Torres barging between two defenders with very realistic results resulting in Metzelder on his backside and a fierce shirt tugging match with Mertesacker. Another criticism is the AI going forward. On defence they are tough to break down you have to create space and the use of the sprint is pointless otherwise. And it takes time to build to a full sprint not too long. Messi was walking and then launched into a dash. They pass well enough and intelligently but without enough menace at times though it was regular level. Hopefully this is solved as well. Referees are fairer and give the advantage too when required. The chants are pretty poor but you can import your won custome chants. They also don't folow the match yet. Yes your fans boo when the opposition have the ball and whistle too but the emotional level is constant. Music inc.Kaiser Chiefs 'Never Miss A Beat' excellent, and the Chemical Brothers. Overall aside from the goalkeeping at times, and the need for the AI attack to be more menacing it's fantastic. I say this having played football games from Sensible Soccer way back in 1992.The PES franchise was in danger of dying after the 2008/9 efforts but they've come back with a bang certainly beating FIFA on the PC. FIFA is better on the X360 and feelings are about equal on the PS3 version of both games. You will need a high end PC for a good game maximum details,ie over 3GB RAM, a good CPU and graphics card. It is CPU intensive. I was using a NVIDIA GeForce9800GT, Quad Core Extremes at 2.6GHz AND 4GB RAM and it ran beautifully. But have a decent cooling system as no doubt CPU and GPU temps will rise rapidly and KILL your PC with time.

Battaglia managed an inch perfect through ball from inside his own half to Tevez. If only he could do that for real he would make Platini, Socrates and Fatso look like mediocrities. ;D

The Winning Eleven 2010 demo is now available to download on both the XBox 360 and PS3 so you can try it Liam. To access the demo, you need to create a new account and set your region to Japan. The teams on offer are Brazil, Italy, Liverpool and Barcelona, with the Saitama stadium 2002 also available. www.youtube.com/watch?All of the problems with the PES2010 demo code are ironed out but not yet as good as the review 90% code. Still a stunning game in the making compared to arcade2010.

PES aside from 2008/9 is the more realistic football simulation. In FIFA every team plays the same. Chicago Fire play the same as Barca .Huh ? There is no player individuality either. Messi is merely a bit faster than other players and Terry can perform the same tricks as him. Hey ? EA are good at Madden and the next gen NHL but at soccer, cricket and rugby they suck balls. PES with this edition hs returned to it's former glory and whilst you play FIFA for a while and get bored with its scripting each PES game is different. The sole gripes with PES are Lawrenson as analyst and rarely some of the goalkeeping. Otherwise there is enormous subtlety and depth with the sliders, cards and the like. Playing the demo Germany play as they do with a high pressing midfield, Italy hit on the counter, France try to get it wide to Ribery and Malouda and players play as they do in real life. You wont get Mertesacker performing chops and step overs and roulettes as in FIFA. EA marketing and hype are great but Konami after two disappointin years have fought back. Cant wait for the 23rd October.

I haven't played the new Pro Evo but have been playing Fifa10 quite a lot over the last few days, so:
Fifa has changed drastically. There seems to be different player movement, making it more difficult to perform impossible acts and upping the realism
Really not true, each team has it's own unique style. Also, when a bad team plays a good team it is incredibly hard to stop the onslaught of pressure from the good team and your tactics need to be adapted.
Players have a rating of 1 to 5 stars on skill. Depending on their level results in the skills they are able to perform, not how likely they are to be successful. So Terry can probs only do simple stepovers, rollovers whereas Messi can to the whole kaboodle.

I still find FIFA lacking that excitement and realism for me. It's too muh pinball too perfect in a bad way and there is very little individuality . Teams do play very similar to each other. Yes they have improved but after surpassing PES for the last two seasons by niucking most of Konami's ideas PES kicks them into touch at least for me this season. Some more videos: www.youtube.com/watch?Superb video: www.youtube.com/watch?Pity the players are not very good. And there is a commentary glitch will you will notice when is a goal not an own goal ? 5:12 is the best move of the game.....

Really ? I've read some of the reviews and takign a general average of them they rate PES2010 at 8.5/10. When some reviews put FIFA's graphics ahead of Konami let alone anything else you know they're rubbish or indeed put PES2009 ahead of PES2010. These reviewers by and large are not football sim experts or have played the game for any length of time as I and countless others have on the demo version. I'm saying this as a player of football games from Sensible Soccer in 1993. PES2008/9 were awful but PES2010 is back to form. Look at this handling of the Europa League: www.youtube.com/watch?FIFA gets stale very quickly. PES I keep playing all year round until the next installment. EA have done their usual massive hype and marketing to boot and no doubt will try and do to Konami what they did to 2K games in NHL and Codemasters in cricket, try to kill the opposition and then revert back to their usually awful sims. Aside from Madden and NG NHL and only the very last two editions of FIFA (and only on consoles) they've failed abysmally.
