...Every DVD Collection Needs"
Not my list, but one taken from here:
dvd-collection-software-review.toptenreviews.com/top-10-movies-every-dvd-collection-needs.html
1. The Godfather
The Godfather takes us deep into the mysterious world of organized crime spawning an audience fascination with the mob that has lived on through to the Sopranos. The Godfather, as the title suggests, is the movie in which all other crime dramas strive to be.
2. Star Wars
Drawing on classic archetypes Star Wars blew our minds with its imagination and special effects. It also invented the Summer Blockbuster as we know it. Star Wars continues to capture new audiences with every generation.
3. Psycho
Psycho changed the way America watches movies, it also taught us that cinema has no rules. There are many movies that make the audience run screaming, but there are few that traumatize the stars of the picture.
4. Some Like it Hot
Cross dressing is always funny, and it’s no wonder AFI voted Some Like it Hot the best comedy of all time. By today’s standards this classic Marylyn Monroe flick is predictable and tame, but at the time it was edgy and really pushed the censor board’s limits.
5. Singin’ in the Rain
Singin’ in the Rain is simply a classic. Produced at the height of the musical’s, and Gen Kelly’s popularity it gives us a special glimpse of Hollywood during simpler times. Besides, it’s just plain fun.
6. Jaws
No movie has destroyed the beach tourist industry quite like Jaws, and after 30 years the eastern shore board is still recovering from the damage Jaws left in its path. For a protagonist that is on screen for only a few moments, his reign of terror has been seared into the minds of a generation.
7. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
One Few Over the Cuckoo’s Nest defined an era. Few movies make you laugh, cry and cower, while driving home a deep and disturbing message.
8. Fargo
Speaking of disturbing… Although Fargo isn’t the first independent film to get national attention and recognition it was one of the first to prove how desensitized we were as an audience. This movie gets funnier every time you watch it.
9. Young Frankenstein
No DVD collection would be complete without the Mel Brook’s classic. Young Frankenstein is an homage to monster movies of the past and has created a genre all its own.
10. When Harry Met Sally
Ok, so romantic comedies aren’t your thing, but you’ve got to admit if you were forced to watch one this would be it. When Harry Met Sally is the romantic comedy all romantic comedies attain to be, funny, lovable, and believable. Besides, the café scene will forever live on in film history.
Some in there that may be contentious - what would you take out; what would you put in?
