6 months too late, I've discovered the Inbetweeners. It's bloody hilarious. But it's only 6 25 minute episodes. Look at all the best British sitcoms. Ricky Gervais has done The Office and Extras which were class, but they're hardly about either. Fawlty Towers only had about 12 episodes in all.
When the Americans find a good formula they keep on going until it really can't last any longer without losing it's touch. Over here we stop them dead when there's loads more potential. It's really frustrating and for me it shows a lack of guts. Writers are too scared to have a bad series and don't risk anything. The Office will rightfully be remembered as a great sitcom, but it won't go down in the same league as Friends that was still class (or at least as successful as ever if you don't agree, as I am being subjective) in its 10th series, and made about 250 episodes. A paltry 14 in comparison. British writers should make more effort when they find the right formula.

yes i know what you mean
...although on the other hand Only Fools and Horses was class and completely raped beyond its capacity in the end.

Extras was smug rubbish. As for the slew of prime shitcoms like 'After You've Gone' and 'My Family' well I don't know why the Beeb bother in all honesty.
Black Books and Peep Show are my favourite 'sitcoms' of recent times.
