I read a very good, short article in the Observer Music Monthly about the prospects for the UK music industry and must admit I found myself agreeing with much of it.... www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/jan/18/female-solo-artistsYes, the indie scene is a barren wasteland at the moment for genuinely exciting guitar bands; the vast majority of bands appear to either fall either under the category of 'earnest, introspective, credibility seeking, arch-miserablists', an unfortunate side-effect or Radiohead's popularity, or 'commerciality craving crap', most notably Scouting For Girls, though even bands like the Pigeon Detectives are turfing out mind-numbingly mediocre fare. In what other era could Coldplay be so maasive FFS?!?! I think it's a fair point that women are taking over; Laura Marling, Duffy, Amy Winehouse - if she can drag herself out of the gutter - are amonsgt those likely to go from strength to strength. More promising is the momentum of the electronica renaissance, and again it's ladies likely to be dominating. Ladyhawke has broken through, Little Boots has been tipped by people not even residing on the planet, and I've just heard some stuff by La Roux which is great. Actually, one of her tracks (a collaboration) is available as a free download from NME.com for those interested, it's this un..... The link for the download for anyone interested is... www.nme.com/blog/index.php?blog=15&title=la_roux_fascination_free_mp3_3&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1So how long do we reckon that the indie guitar band will continue?
