Super Wolves made it five wins in a row as they saw off Southampton to end their long St. Mary’s hoodoo.
Goals from Chris Iwelumo in the eighth minute and Dave Jones (18) effectively sealed Wolves’ first win in Southampton since 1980 and their first ever goals at St. Mary’s on their sixth attempt.
Mick McCarthy’s free scoring Championship table-toppers have now scored two or more goals in their last seven games to add to their billing as the country’s top scorers.
Defender Alex Pearce reduced the arrears on 21 but Saints’ fate was made all the more difficult by the sending off of midfielder Jason Euell two minutes before the break, for a studs-up sliding tackle on Richard Stearman.
The sending off on first impressions looked debatable as Stearman went in similarly hard in the side-on collision, which sparked the full fury of the Southampton crowd.
But on a day where Wolves rode their luck for much of the second half, they had top draw performances from their two loan players – in particular Carlos Edwards.
The Sunderland winger superbly crafted both goals with left wing crosses.
Similarly, Michael Mancienne again looked effortlessly classy amid the muck and nettles of the Championship.
