Jacqui Smith is, I'm certain, trying to attain the title of 'worst home secretary in recent years' - and she's doing a damned good job of it too. Apparently, people just can't wait to get their biometric ID cards. These would the cards that thousands have said they'll break the law rather than get, then? The ones which store an unheard amount of data about you in one big database? (Because that's always secure and safe!) There are entire protest groups against these cards. They're going to fail and go down in flames; a giant waste of time and money. They're hated. But not according to Jacqui... When the Tories come out and say they'll definitely do something different to Labour, and it's actually what the public want, you know it's absolutely unviable and doomed. I hope the weather's nice on whichever planet she lives on...

meh, i don't care ..... plus if the details are actually on the card, the information would be safer in my hands than the governments (though i doubt thats how it works)

What's wrong with I.D cards then?
Would make it a helluva lot easier for me at co-op when serving booze and fags if everyone had I.D cards, rather than having arguments with people that haven't got a form of I.D.

I suspected she'd be a poor Home Secretary as soon as she was appointed. That woman thinks she's the greatest creation ever seen.

"supposedly" ID cards take away your freedoms, rich, in a big brother, Nineteen eighty-four, the government is watching everything, kinda way....

Given the government's record for data going missing, and how easily a system containing everything about you could be hacked, not to mention the ridiculous expense involved in setting it up and maintaining it, and the fact that, despite it being compulsory, we'll have to pay £80-£120 each for the card, I'd say there's quite a lot wrong with them! (Especially when their purported purpose - to help the fight against terrorism - has been ridiculed by the very people it's meant to help [the police etc], rendering the whole system a wasted exercise...)
A national ID card system is a good enough idea, but the government's aiming to take on way more than they've demonstrated themselves to be able to handle, at a far greater expense than the project's worth.

What kinda data is stored on these cards then?
I don't really care what info people find out about me... (as long it isn't my mother maiden name, bank account number and sort code ;D)

(as long it isn't my mother maiden name, bank account number and sort code ;D) Name, date of birth etc, address, dna profile, electronic fingerprint, possibly an iris scan... And all that data will be used to protect your bank details etc, is the government's vision... because, of course, no-one could hack the system and copy the data onto another card

pay for a card That's one of my major problems - if it's compulsory, they should be "free" (i.e. taxpayer expense, as opposed to having to send off a £100 cheque). If they're optional, then fine, charge for them. How're pensioners going to be able to afford it, for instance?

So if if that data is used to protect bank details, then my bank account could be hacked if the system was hacked and card copied?

So if if that data is used to protect bank details, then my bank account could be hacked if the system was hacked and card copied? Potentially, yes. I assume that, when the database is first set up, it'll be solely used as an ID card, but with all that data stored... well, what's the point of a chip and pin or whatever when it can be biometrically linked? Again, it's supposed to help fight terrorism - once a system's hacked, they can become anyone else they want to! (And what good would the cards do anyway? Random stop-and-search in the street; "Excuse me sir, could you insert your card into this device? We'd like to see if you're a known terrorist...") I don't care who they put in charge of the project either, no-one will be able to run a database containing 60+ million people's info flawlessly, so what happens when things go wrong?

Video's no longer available To re-iterate what I said, before people joining now start opening fire without reading the earlier posts; I'm not against the idea of a national ID card in itself. I just don't trust the government to be able to handle it, it costs too much, it won't be a secure system, and far too much will be dependant on it running smoothly.
