Wolves are on the brink of clinching their best start to a season for nearly 60 years.
Mick McCarthy’s team have amassed more points (19) and goals (21) than any other team in the country.
They are now just one victory away from achieving their best start since 1949-50, when Stan Cullis’ side won seven and drew one of their first eight games.
Wolves have already secured their best beginning to a season since 1962, when they also won six and drew one, but Cullis’ side had scored one goal more.
In hotshot Chris Iwelumo, they have the six-goal top League scorer in the top two divisions. Only two players – Bristol Rovers midfielder Rickie Lambert and Bradford striker Peter Thorne, with eight each – have notched more in the country.
Iwelumo said: “We want to keep it going. We’ve got goals in us and things are happening for us on the pitch. We’ve got to build on this. But as I’ve said to people from Day One – we’re taking it one day at a time.
“We’re not getting ahead of ourselves – our feet are firmly on the floor. Watford were something like eight points clear by the middle of October, so we have to take it one game at a time.”
While Iwelumo has shared the headlines with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, Michael Kightly and Sam Vokes, the big striker saluted the team’s unsung heroes.
He said: “It’s nice to have a bit of confidence, but there are no big-time Charlies here. We work hard for each other and it’s happening for us.
“There’s ‘Stears’ (Richard Stearman), Neill Collins, Karl Henry, Wayne Hennessey, Kevin Foley – they’re all awesome. Look at the lads coming off the bench too – Sam Vokes, Andy Keogh and Dave Edwards – it’s unbelievable, every one of them is doing a job.
“It’s a real squad effort – there’s 28 players and everyone wants the same thing – when the 11 are chosen, everyone else wants those players chosen to do the very best that they can.”
Carl Ikeme is set for his first League start for Wolves in Saturday’s clash against Bristol City, as keeper Hennessey faces a one-match ban for his sending off.
