Wolves have launched an official appeal against hat-trick hero Chris Iwelumo’s sending off against Preston on Saturday.
The club have compiled a case comprising statements from the eight-goal striker and Wolves along with video evidence, which all has to be before the FA by tomorrow lunchtime, when their appeal will be heard.
Iwelumo’s sending off was one of three dismissals for Wolves, with boss Mick McCarthy and Wayne Hennessey also given their marching orders to mar the magnificent 3-1 win.
They aren’t going to contest Hennessey’s red card, which means Carl Ikeme is set for his first league start for the club against Bristol City.
Iwelumo expects to have his first red card of his career rescinded for him to face Bristol City on Saturday.
Preston defender Sean St Ledger told referee Martin Atkinson there was no contact after the pair clashed head to head off the ball.
Iwelumo said: “I’ve got full confidence I’ll be involved in the Bristol City match. I’ll be buzzing if it gets rescinded. I was devastated, because I’ve never had a red card. I’ve only had about eight yellow cards in my whole career, it’s not in my nature.
“I just stood over him (St Ledger). He stood up, made a little move towards me, caught my nose and I fell. He lashed out as soon as he made contact with my nose and fell. I was thinking ‘what’s he done here?’
“I couldn’t believe it because he’s a close mate. We’ve got the same agent and we’ve met up off the field.
“He came in with me to see the referee after the match and he told the ref I made no forward movement with my head. He said it was just an accidental clash of heads. Hopefully the ref says he made a mistake and I’ll be playing next Saturday.”
McCarthy praised St Ledger for speaking on Iwelumo’s behalf.
The Wolves boss said: “St Ledger went to see the referee to say nothing happened and you can’t get a better witness than that. Bearing in mind the witness is the other player involved, I would hope the sensible thing will be done and it will get rescinded.”
