Squad Analysis of First Team Squad and Changes Problems that needed solving:- Defense was letting in far to many goals
- Hutton, Woodgate and Gunter were brought in in January. Unfortunately, Hutton is injured and Gunter is not deemed ready (as Zokora is playing RB out of position).
- Goalkeeper not commanding the box and inspiring confidence. Gomez and Sanchez brought in to replace Robonson and Cerny. We will see if it makes a difference.
- We now have three options at left back (Bale, Assou-Ekotto and Gilberto), but lack options at CB and RB
- Cover at CB (or King replacement). With some lack of confidence in Dawson, its surprising that Kaboul and Gardner (plus Chimbonda the emergency CB) have been sold without replacement and Rocha is not part of the first team squad.
- Have not addressed lack of midfield cover for the defence. No specialist holding player bought. The solution seems to be playing 2 deep midfielders in a 4-2-3-1 and let them share defensive duties.Playing Jenas and Modric there is plan A, it seems, but after two opening losses the plan may need revising.
- Midfield unable to dominate
- The main change is a switch three CMs is a 4-2-3-1. This might allow us to get the best out of Jenas, Zokora and Huddlestone. Also it suits the new signings: Modric, Bentley and Dos Santos. The latter two can play anywhere in the attacking trio.
- At the moment Jenas and Modric are the favoured deep duo, with Bentley or Dos Santos in the centre in front of them. This is an attacking combination and we might be better with at least one defensive minded player (Zokora, Huddlestone or a specialist holding midfielder).
- Modric is very tenacious for a small creative player. Playing him in the forward position with a defensive player paired with Jenas would provide a more robust midfield and provide a better base for Modric’s playmaking skills
- The extra man in midfield is partially negated when two small attackiing players like Lennon and Dos Santos are played together
- Replacing the goals from two wantaway strikers.
- This is an unexpected problem. Berbatov was always a likely departure, but Keane leaving was a surprise. With Defoe leaving in January, we have gone from an abundance to drought in the striker department.
- The solution is to use a fluid front four in a 4-2-3-1. Preseason was encouraging but the opening games show it is more difficult in a competitive English game.
- This provides the chance for Bent, last seasons expensive signing. While he is good as a lone striker in a counteracting team (e.g. at Charlton), the jury is out when in a team that is trying to breakdown the opposition
- Playing Modric in the centre of the three might make a more creative options.
- With Berbatov off or not in the right frame of mind we have no options or backup for Bent.
- Dos Santos can play second striker, but relying on a young player new to the PL is risky
- Another problem is the lack of a targetman to exploit crosses from Bentley and Bale.
- In the final week of the transfer window we need to solve these problems. One solution would be Arshavin (to replace Keane) and keeping (or replacing) Berbatov
