Aston Villa defender Wilfred Bouma could be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines after dislocating his ankle.
The Netherlands international, 30, was hurt in a tackle early on in Villa's Intertoto Cup win over Odense.
"It's terrible news because he played ever single game last season. He was fantastic," said Villa manager Martin O'Neill. "But he'll come through it."
Bouma's team-mates looked on in shock as the left-back underwent treatment before being replaced by Gareth Barry.
The Dutchman was taken to hospital where an X-ray showed his right ankle was dislocated rather than broken.
O'Neill heaped praise on the medical staff, adding: "They've done a fine job."
