CHELSEA MAKE SCOLARI'S JOB EASY
Luiz Felipe Scolari is a man to be envied. Having agreed a four-year contract worth approximately £27m to become Chelsea's new manager, he has reputedly been presented with a list of transfer targets that includes Fernandes Torres and Kaka.
Better still, he has been offered a blank cheque by Roman Abramovich and permitted to add the name of Deco to the list of targets. This is fantasy football management made easy.
But in Scolari's case, this is fantasy being made reality. Tellingly, the backpage of The Times, Independent, and Guardian each carries the same announcement - clearly, an influential figure at Stamford Bridge has spoken. Five years after buying the club, Abramovich is seemingly intent on financing a spree that would Chelsea's previous forays modest in comparison.
Nonetheless, even with the weight of Abramovich's money on their side, signing Kaka and Torres will be far from straightforward, although the Chelsea hierarchy apparently believe they have good reason to capture both forwards.
Presumably rehashing the words of their source at Stamford Bridge, The Independent notes: 'The appointment of Scolari was attractive to the Chelsea hierarchy because of the influence he will have on Kaka, who is regarded as a viable target because of Milan's failure to qualify for the Champions League next season.'
Ricardo Quaresma, David Villa and Robinho are also mentioned as potential signings, but it is the link with Torres that is the most intriguing. According to The Times, 'Chelsea have been told that one of the Americans is willing to let Torres go for the right price and are planning to test Liverpool's resolve with a bid.'
