So a nation gasped in shock and the phone in show editors rubbed their hands in anticipation. Golden Balls omitted Oh how could he in the light of.....
In the light of what? Yes Brand Beckham won every England game for us, Brand Beckham was a star in every game, Brand Beckham single handedly got us to Japan by beating Greece with that wonder free kick. Beckham the player however tells a different story.
Basically the way I see it Beckham has never lived up to his hype and the only reason he's stood out is the fact that so many of the other players where poor. Lets take that Greece game, that wonder free kick in the last seconds oh the drama! Everybody seams to have forgotten the four others he hoofed completely in normal time.
In this years world cup he personally I think he became a hindrance more then an asset, Yes he scored two free kicks and provided a cross for Crouch but thats what he's in the team to do.
His influence, to me, counted more off the pitch then on it. It's no secret that the England team played a supporting role to the PR Icon to the annoyance of the players. He had influence over Sven and it could be argued therefor a direct influence over team selection. This being the case then again it could be suggested that younger players who didn't fit his clique or even worse threatened to out perform him, where not picked lost their chance to shine.
McLarren has not shut the door completely on Becks and could recall him. But our new boss has done what he had to, send out a clear message to the media, players and managers alike he is not frightened to make tough decisions and he is in charge and will not be dictated to by corporate hangers on that control Beckhams life.
Becks to be truthful has nothing more to offer then Players such as Lennon and even Pennant in terms of commitment and Terry will make a far better captain. At long last perhaps we will start to see a real England Team not the designer outfit that stumbled through the group games and eventually fell flat on its face again.
I look forward to the Greece game with great interest, I think we will be pleasantly surprised.
