Joseph Heller comfortably tops the list. Catch 22 is the masterpiece of the 20th century. Also a fan of Anthony Burgess, and just lately have been getting into Gore Vidal. Ah so you like confusing books I like: Daphne Du Maurier Dan Brown (easy reads) Elizabeth Gaskell Tony Hawks Bill Bryson Alistair Cooke I'm sure there are more but I tend to read more non fiction than fiction these days

Tony Hawks? Isn't he a skateboarder? Yes but there is also a comedian/travel writer of the same name. He was in Morris Minor and Majors which you probably won't remember because you're a young cub.

I James Frey (whether he will write more than the two he has is another thing) He's one of mine too. I heard he's in the middle of writing something. Something completely different. Do poets count? I know he is one of yours it was your good self that recommended him to me silly!

I enjoyed Enid Blyton when I was younger and have always enjoyed Roald Dahl. Tom Clancy is good to read as well, have read all his Net Force stories, some of the Net Force Explorers, as well as a couple of Jack Ryan novels.
Otherwise, am willing to give most books a go.
