We've done decent books, I'd like to do a thread discussing good authors. I'll start by saying Nick Hornby. They're not heavy or intellectual so much, but they're easy reads, funny and in so many social scenarios he hits the nail on the head. I'm on Fever Pitch at the mo, I should have started with it, but hey. Other suggestions?

P.s. I know he's hardly prolific, there's only a few in his name compared to some others, but I like all the ones I've read.

I have a few authors that can do no wrong in my eyes -
Brett Easton Ellis
Michael Marshall Smith
Chuck Palahniuk
Carl Hiaasen
James Frey (whether he will write more than the two he has is another thing)
For easy reading I like -
Harlan Coben (though his latter books are not very good) John Grisham (read in a day) Dan brown (cheesy)
Also as COYS says, I am a big fan of James Herbert but have not read any for years now.

Depending on my mood, Stephen King (for a deep, heavier read) or Nelson Demille (for lighter snarky fun). Terry Pratchett also warrants an honourable mention, as does Roald Dahl (anyone who's read his short stories will appreciate that choice), but the first two are definitely my favourites.

It changes all the time - currently, I adore Stephenie Meyer, but Terry Pratchett tops the list as well. I do enjoy Stephen King too... I used to like J.K. Rowling and Anne Rice, but they've done things to piss me off. (I've been annoyed at her since the fifth Potter book, and Anne Rice's "Oh noes, I found God and now all my vampire books are evil and I hate them and boo!" change of heart makes me want to throw a brick at her head.)

About to try a Salman Rushdie, never been near them before. Ben Elton had a couple of decent ones but mainly I hate them. P.D. James never interests me. When I was a kid Enid Blyton, I know that's girly but hey. I'd like to see more of Giles Foden as Last King of Scotland was a great book, far better than the film.

Joseph Heller comfortably tops the list. Catch 22 is the masterpiece of the 20th century.
Also a fan of Anthony Burgess, and just lately have been getting into Gore Vidal.

I James Frey (whether he will write more than the two he has is another thing) He's one of mine too. I heard he's in the middle of writing something. Something completely different. Do poets count?
