I've started reading loads the last 5 months. The best ones are:
1984 - Classic
Last King of Scotland - You might of seen the film (I need to) but the book is fascinating and gripped me to the end.
But the best is one I'm still only half way through, called Shantaram. It's about an escaped Australian convict who runs to Bombay in the 1980s and lives in the slums there and sets up a free health clinic, gets into the drug trade and money laundering and the mafia. It's all a true story. It lacks a main plot, but each little storyline that comes and goes absolutely grips you, such as a cholera epidemic and him being set up by someone and thrown into prison with no trial for about 4 months. It's massive mind.

And for less heavy read William Sutcliffe makes me laugh. Are You Experienced? is about travelling around India and the stereotypes and cynical attitude of the main character make it. You don't have to of travelled round there to understand.
New Boy is even funnier, about a boy who has loads of teenage issues in his Sixth Form years. It had me laughing very hard.
Nicky Hornby - Long Way Down also had me laughing. Some of you have probably read it. It's about 4 characters who met on the roof when they were planing to commit suicide and they decide to meet up sometimes and see if they change their mind, it's very funny, although Jess does your head in.
All of a sudden I love books.
