By now the name must have reached your ears. As a person who have followed him since he arrived at Hamburg I can savely say that this buy will last.
As a defender he gained the reputation for being tenacious with his fair tackling abilities aswell as his excellent man-marking skills. His career had a tranquil start, being a low key player for RKC Waalwijk, but then was brought to Hamburg where he had some time to settle.
Soon he became the best defensive duo with van Buyten and this development didn't escape the eye of van Basten who handed him his first call-up in 2004. In that time he was still not very well known. Even in Holland. After a few scintilating performences for the Dutch team he soon became more known and continued his fine form which contributed in granting Hamburg the chance to play in the Champions League.
At the age of 24 he has the time to become one of the better defenders in the EPL. But it wasn't always this easy anf forthcoming for Khalid Boulahrouz. He lost his father at young age while being in the same house and didn't have a luxurious youth. Still he found the strength to continue to work his way up and further, incidently making his personality show on the field as a fair battler. The same unflamboyant, sober character was exhibited when the likes of Jaap Stam made his fame and people regard Khalid as his successor.
A few trademarks:
- tenacious, no-nonsense tackler
- Not very tall, but pacy for a defender
- Excellent man marker
- Versatile as he can play on the right and centre back
- Strongly build, rarely injured
