Sydney FC have emerged as rivals to Cardiff City and Leicester in the battle to sign former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler. The Bluebirds were in pole position to sign the 32-year-old earlier this week, but sources close to the A-League club claim they are serious rivals for the England striker's signature. Leicester City, Celtic and Rangers are also among the eight clubs Fowler's agent has stated have declared an interest in the player who was not offered a new deal by Anfield boss Rafael Benitez.
Bluebirds chairman Peter Ridsdale reportedly told the Liverpool FC website: "We have offered an attractive package and are hopeful Robbie will decide to come."
However, he also told BBC Sport Wales that he was surprised to hear that comments attributed to him had appeared on that website.
"There's been a lot of press speculation, obviously I know Robbie from his days at Leeds and he's an outstanding finisher and outstanding footballer," Ridsdale said.
"Were we ever in a position where we could attract him, I think our supporters would realise our talk of ambition is more than just talk.
"If and when we're in a position to announce the arrival of a player of that stature we will do so, but in the meantime I don't like talking about speculation."

Yes, he'd be a good signing, for another season or two tops. I still wish we didn't have to sell Chopra! "Who's that leaving, over tha hill, it's Michael Chopra....!"

Fowler is only about 70% of the player he used to be. Also when he's not playing for Liverpool he's about another 40% less effective than when he was at his best. So in truth you're looking to sign someone who is now the striking equivalent of a short Jason Lee!!

...Risdale. Not learnt a thing from Leeds. At least it's Cardiff he'll be ruining this time though I look forward to y'all eating your words when he's banging them in for fun! I gather that a lot of the money is sponsorship deals and that kind of stuff, you're very right - we couldn't and wouldn't spend silly money on an aging striker for the sake of looking flash. Oh, and I laugh every time that I think of Seth Johnson!

He may well do, but I think he's on a last 'money-grabbing hurrah', why else would he come to a club like yours? He's well passed his best. I equally look forward to seeing you eat your words when you decline due to an unsustainable wage bill on your 9000 gate. You need to read up on what he did at Leeds then... A lot do, but remember; what goes around come around- especially with Risdale in charge. I'll be laughing when we pass you on the way back up, however far off it may be

He might be coming to Cardiff as he was impressed by the ambition of the club, and in fairness going to Sydney was probably too far for his family. Plus who the hell are Sydney FC? The gates will rise when the new stadium is ready, admittedly that's a while away, but seeing as it's all planned out, I don't think that'll happen. I know what Ridsdale did - well some of it. I'm not delighted that he's involved with Cardiff but so far he hasn't repeated his fuck-ups... Danny Mills? £35k a week?! Hehehe! ;D Nah fella I usually am quite sympathetic to the Weeds, a lot of you are nice people, but y'know, if you dish it out... I suspect it'll be a VERY long time before you get anywhere near back to normal, shame really, but at least it curtails the smug tendency. It must be so frustrating, mind, Yorkshire always seems so up itself, but it has no clubs of the quality of those across the Pennines... Shame...

...Or it could be that you offered the most money? LMAO... You're building a new, bigger stadium, when you're average crowd is half of your capacity. Good business sense that. You'll just be another Coventry, but on a smaller scale, playing shit football in a half-empty and atmosphere-less stadium. If Ninian Park has a good point, it would be the atmosphere and character of it- the only things it's got going for it. Although Coventry did have a loaded business man to pay for it. What have you got...? ;D It looks like 'work in progress' from the above evidence ;D Indeed, tis only banter We may have paid stupid wages, but at least we did that to watch the Champions league and 'live the dream', you're paying Fowler daft money to watch Scunthorpe It all depends. As soon as Bates jumps ship, people will want to start dealing with us again. He is the main obstacle at the moment. You saw all the potential investors turn-out for the CVA meeting, so we have potential. I think 10 years minimum, but it will be woth it just to prove you all wrong, and beat you on the way back up, and possibly kick you whilst you're down, as you did us. If you can't think your own area is the best, then what can you do? It's because Yorkshire is one of the few counties with it's own obvious, and unique cultures, traditions etc, and the people are proud of that. I don't think we're the only people in this country who are that way. And tbh I couldn't give a shit if you think I'm up myself. I won't bite with the pennines comment

What have you got...? ;D New stadium is needed. It'll be nice. Meh, would rather be Coventry than Leeds right now! Yes well there is an absurdity in your "WACCOE" thing... It's all upward progress, things got a lot worse in Cardiff than they have yet at Leeds, for reasons unclear to meself... mostly before I was old enough to notice. Scunthorpe, another club which are currently doing better than Leeds! Boy, that must hurt... You're lucky he's old... he might die or step-down soon, if you're fortunate too! Oh yeah, people want to sort you out I know that. Wow, a whole decade! Nah you won't be doing that, and I hope to god I'm not posting on here in 10 years time! How tragic... I know but I find it genuinely baffling! It ain't that great, it's just another county! Haha you won't bite, but you know it's true, it must boil your blood to see "the real United" thriving while your pisspoor peacocks drown in shite?! I've gone too far...

On what grounds is it needed? Aesthetic grounds? It certainly makes little business or financial sense, which is much more important, and costly when it goes tits up. I wouldn't Is signing a past his best, and aging player, as your highest earner, really upward progress? You should invest in your academy- much more worthwhile. Of course it hurts, but football is cyclical, and the good times make it worth-while. I'm certain we'll be back, so until then I'll/we'll 'grin and bare it'. Yeah, can't be long left now. We will, as said above football is cyclical, you'll become shit and insignificant again- don't worry though, you've got Risdale to guide you through it ;D In your opinion. You like London, I wouldn't piss on it if it were on fire, opinions differ. They aren't the real united. It doesn't bother me at all- every club has it's ups and downs, they will too. I don't even consider them rivals anymore, we're not good enough to.

I wouldn't Sorry, didn't see this earlier. Aesthetic grounds, but more importantly safety grounds. Plus it is a bigger stadium so it will be economical when more fans are showing up. Well no, I wouldn't LITERALLY want to be Coventry or Leeds! ;D Our academy's doing quite nicely by us thanks! And the new stadium will have new training facilities and academy associated with them! Football is cyclical-ish... some clubs have got better over history, some worse... and some have ceased to exist! *whistles* Sleeping giants Cardiff City! Don't you forget it! As I say, it'll be a fair while before you get the chance to lose hopelessly to us again! I see the good in London, I have to, I live here! Erm, I think you'll find they are the real United! Not that I care. Ha, that's right, you're not good enough! Again I remind you - I like most Leeds fans, and will overlook what team you support as long as you don't disrespect Cardiff!

Not that I care. Ha, that's right, you're not good enough! Again I remind you - I like most Leeds fans, and will overlook what team you support as long as you don't disrespect Cardiff! When more fans turn up? You mean for the three games a season that you manage to get 16,000? As a Leeds fan I hesitate to call someone deluded, but I think you are if you feel your going to be going from 9000 a week to in excess of 22000 regularly anytime soon. It all looks like you're taking too big a step, too quickly, and as we found out- it's risky. Who did you say was paying for it btw? Anyway, at least if it goes tits up, it gives the rest of the football league a new hated club to laugh at. Sleeping giants? How about comatosed And 'giants' is also debateable- you're a 'nearly team' like Leeds, although you've won a lot less I see both the good and the bad of Yorkshire, and I still think it's a top place. They aren't the real united at all. The best united possibly, but not the original, and they're only the 2nd best supported club in their home city ;D Nope we're not good enough anymore, but at least I can say, that we have been in my lifetime, and I've seen us beat them. Have you seen Cardiff beat them, or even in the same division? Likewise, the boards Cardiff fans are/were sorted people, just much like ours, your scummy element of support lets you down, and gives you a bad name amongst other supporters. 'Don't dis Cardiff' Jules the chav
