Despite coming away with the crucial win which pretty much guarantees our Championship status for the 2006/07 season. I was not really impressed with yesterday's performance.
The wholesale changes didnt really work and the players looked alien to the new formation we adopted. If we had played a more clinical team yesterday, we would have not crept away with the three points after a lacklustre performance.
El Hamadoui, before he was substituted, really failed to win me over. He tried, but you could see he was lacking match practice and looked a yard off the pace and didnt seem to have the understanding he had with his team-mates, prior to his injury lay-off and he and Lisbie never really linked well.
Seth returned to the line up yesterday, despite showing glimpses of the form that has won him many plaudits this season, he failed to make a impact. And I felt Westley took a gamble starting him and I felt it was a game too soon, to start Seth.
Barnes, who was forced out to the right, due to personnel changes, showed his usual hunger to win the ball and make a run. But never provided the width on the right, as he tended to drift into the centre.
Defensively we seemed a bit unsteady, the height and physicality of the likes of Asaba and May, ruffled our feathers. Millwall played some neat passing football and had brief spells of domination, but never really had the prowess in front of goal to punish us. Any team with something about themselves could have easily scored two or three past us yesterday.
Smith scored the winner and he deserved it, because he works tirelessly for the team, largely without reward. After linking up with Lisbie on the left, he cut inside the box and nestled a curling shot into the far corner, as the Millwall defence stood still. He should of scored a brace, had he not stumbled over the ball, with the goal at his mercy from five yards out, after desperate Millwall defending.
He was not the only one, to waste a glorious chance or two. Lisbie had a number of opportunities to end his goal-drought in front of the home crowd. But failed to capitalise on several straightforward situations. His pace seemed to cause Millwall bother, although it was clear he was not as sharp as in previous games due to his recurring hamstring injury.
McIndoe and Bolder looked hungry, when introduced and both showed why they were unfortunate to be discarded from the starting line up.
Yesterday, although we fended off Millwall, we lacked the rhythm and confidence we have shown in recent weeks, this was due to the changes in personnel and formation, the players werent comfortable with it, but managed to do enough. I think we would have run riot had we kept the same system as previous weeks, just replacing Peschisolido with Lisbie.
I dont really hold too much confidence for the Q.P.R game, after yesterday's performance, but they are going into the game on back-to-back defeats, and we won yesterday. So if Westley gets the tactics and selection right, we may be able to get the point we need to guarantee our safety or possibly our third away win of the season.
