I often hear people saying how the Championship is the most exciting league in the world. How it is more enjoyable to be involved in and can bring the most excitement/despair to fans. These are just very basic opinions I have gauged from people. To start with, as many do, I wrote these claims off, thinking that how can a second tier of football be one of the most exciting in the world. Serie A, The Premiership, La liga and Ligue1/Bundesliga all have a much higher standard of players, the football is more enjoyable to watch (in some cases) and the players try to put on a show.
However is this correct? All the leagues mentioned are losing their effect. Sure I love being in the Premiership and always hope Tottenham are there and winning things but times have changed. I think my club is one of the few exceptions nowadays that still stick to the proper way of playing football, on and off the pitch. The premiership is so predictable and boring. It is filled with corruption, cheating foreigners and whinging managaers. Technology is the way everyone wants to go but that is not needed.
This season people are saying it it one of the most exciting finishes because two teams are still in the title race at this late stage of the season. Thats great, really great. Thing is though, it is the same two teams as you would imagine. Man U have won umpteen titles since the Premiership begain in '92 and Chelsea have won it for the last two years. What is the big excitement, unless you are a Man U or Chelsea, in watching the same two teams battle it out for the premiership trophy. There is no scope in it at all. Every thing is pretty much set and buried towards the start of the season. There may be one or two surprises packages such as Reading or West Ham at alternate ends but other than that people can predict where teams will finish. We know who will finish in the first four, the European challengers, the mid table spaces plus those who will be involved in the relegation dogfight. It is clear for all to see and year in year out the same sort of things happenes. La Liga and Serie A are slightly diversified but they are on the degree of predictability.
Chelsea and Man United are the two teams ruling over English football. Is it any coincedence that they both have many cheating foreigners, imported into our game in their starting line ups. They have bitter whinging managers and always seem to get their own way. I think not. This is the state that our Premier game is in. More and more so its appeal is starting to fade away and something needs to be done about.
Video Technology, why? Without meaning to get onto a conpletely different topic which I could go on for hours about we don't need it. Football has been played for over a hundred years without it so why bring it in now? I think the mistakes and not knowing you will get the right decision every time is part of the mystery of football. Anything can happen, the smaller teams can get big results. I think by bringing it in you will continue the slide that is ruining Premiership football.
I may well have gone along way off topic during that little rant but it was a good introductuon to the primary point I want to put across. From the despair and corruption in the premiership I know lead onto what I want to talk to. On Monday whilst doing various things I had Soccer Special on with Jeff Stelling et all, listening to the scores come in. The scorlines from the championship really caught my eye. The changeable scorelines really attracted me. One minute I was happy the next diappointed. The teams I wanted to win were winning and then suddenly losing and vice versa. Everyone can beat everyone in that league. It has been happening all season. Nobody is secure in their positions. If you had predicted a Championship table at the start of the season I can guarentee it will be along way off the mark. I think the league is one of the most interesting in the world if not The most interesting. At both ends of the table, with four games left, there is alot going on. This is happening in the premiership but everyone knew which teams it would be. Who would have predicted that last years strugglers Derby County would be in the automatic promotion places and Leeds United, the play off final losers would be in the relegation Zone. There are many surprises within this league. Colchester United are not far off the play offs, but were many peoples tips for relegation this season. Hard work, passion and good team play can get you a very long way.
I of course realise that as a spectacle the big leagues have much more skill and class on display. Give me a Premiership game on TV any day of the week over a Championship one if I am looking for the games quality but if I want one where the result could go any way then it would be a Championship one. Monday was a prime example. Preston in 4th at the time were beaten by Southend in 23rd. Barnsley in 22nd beat Birmingham in 3rd. Derby in 1st at the time were held by Coventry in about 15th. The league is wide open and everyone beats everyone. The games and situation can change as quick as a flash as the games yesterday showed.
With only 10 minuites left to play in all the games concerning teams in the zone, these were the scores and how the table looked....
Colchester 0-1 Leeds
QPR 1-2 Luton
Barnsley 1-0 Birmingham
Preston 2-1 Southend
Wolves 3-1 Hull
Plymouth 3-0 Leicester
Leicester 47
QPR 46
Leeds 45
Hull 44
Barnsley 44
Luton 40
Southend 39
Leeds were beating Colchester, Preston beating Southend and Luton beating QPR. In the final 10 minutes of these games though the results changed completely which gave the table a completely different complexion. I was celebrating like I would if England scored (not Spurs, I Wasn't that passionate) when Colchester scored their second and then Southend scored their third. I hate Preston and Leeds for various reasons. The Great thing was it had many reprecussions for both clubs and all because of the teams they were playing kept going till the end and didn't give up.
Colchester 2-1 Leeds
QPR 3-2 Luton
Barnsley 1-0 Birmingham
Preston 2-3 Southend
Wolves 3-1 Hull
Plymouth 3-0 Leicester
QPR 49
Leicester 47
Hull 44
Barnsley 44
Leeds 42
Southend 42
Luton 37
As you can see, by the end of the games so much had changed. The league really caught my eye on Monday. Anyone 3 of 9/10 can go up and any 3 of 6/7 can go down. You don't get this is the premiership. Its the same ol' teams doing the same things.
You may not agree with any of this, I may not be talking much sense to you but I think the Championship has many plus points. It is exciting, interesting and is wide open year in year out. Everyone has the same standards and teams play for each other. No one would expected Watford to go up but they did through sheer hard work and Aidy coming in.
I of course have been, and always will be a Premiership boy. It is the league I love and I wish my club get alot of success within it but I can see a bigger perspective. Many may not be able to see down the line here, but in the second tier of English football we have a very exciting one. It is well worth a watch and just keep an eye on it. You take your eye of it and next time you look roles could have been reversed. I hadn't written a post like this is a little while so I thought I had better. Thought? Storts
Cheers Lee for the Tables....
